RUTES MATEMÀTIQUES

ROUTE 1  - From Torres de Serrans to the Botanical Garden

ROUTE 4  - From Mercat de Colom to La Nau

In collaboration with the Mathematical Education Society of the Valencian Community Al-Khwârizmî, the routes aim to use this environment as a didactic resource to scientific dissemination, teaching and learning of mathematics with the objective of that any citizen  or student develop positive attitudes towards them and achieve a more significant learning. The planned routes will make that the environment of the old part of the city of Valencia and more modern facilities, such as the Science Museum Príncipe Felipe, its streets, its parks and public facilities, might become in an important source of mathematical activities. The objective of the activity is that secondary and high school students learn to see and appreciate the mathematics of their environment nicely. The rout will start with a previous session where they will work the itinerary with the city maps and they will be given the necessary materials (measuring tapes, clinometers, calculators, didactic notebooks…)

MATHEMATICS WORKSHOP

The workshop is divided in two parts. First, the organisers will explain different types of surfaces, their sections (this is what plain figures can appear when a surface is cut by another plain) and the uses of knowing the sections of a geometrical body.

In the second part, the attendees will have the opportunity of building some real models of the surfaces that have been previously explained in the first part by means of templates. They will cut the sections, using scissors and paper, and then rebuild the surface.

María García Monera, teacher of mathematics in secondary education, is the responsible of the organisation of this workshop in the Faculty of Mathematics in Burjassot.

GEOLOGY WORKSHOP

The Faculty of Biological Sciences of the Universitat de València (Burjassot Campus). Anna García Forner, Curator of Scientific Collections of the Geology Museum is the responsible of the workshops.

Workshop of mineral identification. The workshop proposes the recognition and identification of mineral species from physical features such as the colour, brightness, hardness, magnetism, the colour of the line, etc. For the realization of the workshop, students will have the help of a dossier, a very simple dichotomous key and specialised monitors. The workshop is divided in two parts, the first part will consist on a theoretical introduction and, in the second part, the previous acquired knowledge will implement.

Micropaleontology workshop. The objective of this workshop is to teach to students an unknown aspect of palaeontology to the general public, but which has a big importance in the case of knowing the distant past. The students will be given a guide with a summary of the concepts that will be used, including illustrations that will help to identify the materials.

ASTRONOMY WORKSHOP

Place: Astronomy Workshop, Astronomy Classroom, Faculty of Physics of the Universitat de Valencia (Burjassot Campus)

Enric Marco, technician of the Astronomy Classromm, initiates this activity with a brief talk about twenty minutes, to detail the activities which astronomers do, and to explain briefly the main celestial objects.

Then, with the telescope, the Sun will be observed. Its main features and how to be observe it safely will be explained. In case the atmospheric conditions are adverse for the observation, this part will be replaced by another activity of the Astronomy Classroom.

FAMELAB

Within the framework of the scientific dissemination of the Campus of International Excellence VLC/CAMPUS and the Science Week, the Universitat de València, the Universitat Politècnica de València and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) hots a training day organised by the FECYT and the British Council, the promoters of FameLab in Spain, the international contest of scientific monologues in which more than 25 countries from all over the world participate.

FameLab tries to find new voices that disseminate the investigation in an entertaining and rigorous way through three-minute monologues. In the 2015 edition, the selection phase will remain open until 3rd February, 2015.

Students, researchers and science teachers resident in Spain can participate through a video in which they tell, without presentations, a science story that captivates the public.

During the day, which will take place on 18th December, we will show you the dynamics of the contest, we will teach you the main techniques to prepare your monologue and we will discover the most useful tricks when facing the public.

The programme of the day is as followed:

10:30 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. – Presentation of FameLab – Representatives of FECYT and British Council.

11:15 a.m. – 12 noon – I participated in FameLab – Experiences and learning of Eduardo Sáenz de Cabezón in FameLab Spain.

12 noon – 1:30 p.m. –Masterclass on writing and interpretation of monologues. Belén Rubio, actress and monologist.

1:30 p.m. – 2 p.m. – Presentation of monologues by candidates.

IMPORTANT: If you have an idea for the monologue or even you have already prepared one, at the end of the masterclass you will have the opportunity to represent it in public and Belén Rubio and Eduardo Sáenz will be able to give you advice on how to improve the content and the performance.

Activity free of charge.

Place: Hall of Degrees of the Faculty of Chemistry of the Universitat de València (Block E – first floor)
