The faculties and schools are the centres in charge of the organisation of the range of courses and academic, administrative and management processes to the obtaining of degree qualifications, other qualifications and university extension activities. Also, their purpose is  spreading the culture, according to the Statutes of the Universitat.
The faculties have a dean, and the schools of a director that heads the Centre Board, highest government organism that represents the teaching and researcher staff, of administration and services and the students.
The Centre Board has, among its competencies, the election of the dean or director that is named by the rector.
To occupy this position it is necessary to fulfil, as set in the article 38 of the Statutes, the following conditions: being professor with permanent link to the UV, not having been revoked as such during the six prior months to the election, and that the candidacy that has to be voted by the Centre Board is supported at least by a 10% of the members of the Board.
The dean or director of the centre is elected for a 3-year period with just one possibility of consecutive reelection and designates, within the members of the centre, vice-deans or deputy directors, as well as a secretary and, if necessary, a deputy secretary, that are named by the rector. All of them constitute the dean or direction team of the centre.
The functions of the dean or director of the centre are, with the assistance of the dean or direction team, as well as exercising the responsibility of the direction of the centre, according to the article 40 of the Statutes of Universitat de València:

  1. Representing the centre
  2. Convening the Centre Board
  3. Executing the agreements of the Centre Board
  4. Supervising the functioning of the services and ordinary management of the centre
  5. Elaborating the schedule proposal
  6. Proposing the initiation of disciplinary proceedings to any member of the centre
  7. Proposing the Centre Board those activities that consider pertinent
  8. In general, all the competencies derived from the article 34 of the Statutes coming from the Centre Board, that regulates the functions of the centres

The article 34 of the Statutes of UV establishes that the functions of the centres are:

  1. Proposing the implementation of new degrees
  2. Issuing a report about the proposals of curricula that lead to obtain the several degrees
  3. Organising the teaching, coordinate it and supervise it following the curricula by means of the degree academic committee
  4. Applying the guidelines of Universitat de València about language policy, specially those relating the elaboration of organisational proposals of the academic year.
  5. Promoting the cultural activities and university extension activities
  6. Promoting initiatives and implementing means to improve the quality of the several programmes and services provided by the centre
  7. Electing the representatives of the centre in the UV committee
  8. Providing the necessary materials to the training of the staff linked to the centre
  9. Carrying out the collaboration activities of UV with public or private organisms in all that affecting the centre
  10. Managing the budgetary allocation of the centre and controlling their own services
  11. Carrying out the administrative management so that the previous functions can be developed
