During the Spanish Civil War, aviation emerged as one of the most important factors that would tip the balance towards one side or the other. In this context, and due to the lack of existing infrastructures, a series of aerodromes were built all over Spain. Valencia was no exception; throughout the conflict, up to 38 aviation fields were built to supply goods to battlefronts and defend against enemy attacks.
This exhibition, organised by the Valencian Ministry of Housing, Public Work and Territorial Planning via the Demetrio Ribes Chair, presents these aerodromes and their constituent elements—command and guard posts, shelters and gunpowder magazines—as a defence network for the region and situates them in their historical context, alongside bombings and air warfare, aircraft and aviators, industrial production and cartography, and surrounded by culture, art and memory.
