The web ranking of universities, Webometrics, of the CSIC, which measures the visibility and presence on the web of institutions, places the University of Valencia as the second in Spain, only outranked by the University of Barcelona, after having climbed one position regarding the previous edition. It is also the national third best in the Incites Essential Science Indicators (ESI) by number of citations, a classification updated in March that measures emerging scientific trends and institutions, documents, journals and countries that excel in research.
Webometrics is an initiative of the Cybermetrics Laboratory, a research group of the CSIC, which is published twice a year and analyses 11,999 institutions. In the last edition, in January 2019, the University of Valencia ranked 205 in the world and 63 in Europe, which means that it went up seven and six positions, respectively, compared to the same period of 2018.
On a global scale, this classification is led by the universities of Harvard and Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, while in Europe the universities of Oxford, Cambridge and the University College London are at the forefront. In Spain, the five positions are completed by the Autonomous University of Barcelona (3rd), the University of Granada (4th) and the Polytechnic University of Madrid (5th).
For its part, the Incites Essential Science Indicators (ESI) ranking, by Clarivate Analytics, is a tool that analyses data extracted from more than 12 million articles from more than 12,000 journals over eleven years, updated every two months. This online platform classifies authors, institutions, countries and journals in 22 fields of research based on the performance of publications and citations.
In the ESI, over 6,009 institutions, the University of Valencia has climbed 9 worldwide positions compared to the same period of the previous year, going from position 322 to 313, since the number of citations has increased notably, from 401,607 in March 2018, to 461,633 this year. In addition, the UV is the second in Spain in the hot papers indicator (articles published in the last two years that have received a very high number of citations in the last two months) and third in top papers and also in highly cited papers.
At the international level, the Incites Essential Science Indicators classification by citations is led by the American universities of California and Harvard and the French National Centre for Scientific Research. For its part, in Spain the ranking is led by the universities of Barcelona and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, while the fourth and fifth places correspond to the Autonomous University of Madrid and the Complutense University of Madrid.
By subjects, Agricultural Sciences stands out among the 100 best centres in the world in number of citations, in Economics and Businesses the 101st in the world and the best Spanish university in number of publications and in the areas of Physics and Psychiatry / Psychology in second national position in both publications as well as in citations in both.
Finally, when analysing the quality articles, in the three indicators top papers, highly cited papers and hot papers, the University is placed in the first national position in the subjects of Agricultural Sciences, Geosciences and Microbiology, and is also the first of Spain in hot topics in Physics.
Indicators
The indicators of the Webometrics Ranking of world Universities are impact and visibility (50%); excellence (35%), transparency (10%) and presence (5%), and use as a data source Majestic, Ahrefs and Google Scholar citations.
The Incites Essential Science Indicators (ESI) data are obtained from the count of articles published in journals indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection. The indicators analysed are the number of articles (articles published over a period of 11 years), citations, impact articles (top papers), highly cited papers and, finally, hot papers.
