The origin of IULMA was the creation in the University of Alicante of a Research Unit called CETIVA (Centre for Industrial Terminology of the Autonomous Region of Valencia) by Doctor Enrique Alcaraz Varó, who lead the research group “Professional and academic English (IPA)” at the heart of which many relevant iniciatives have been carried out. We must emphasize the bilingual dictionaries specialized in several professional areas that were arised in CETIVA and now are published as IULMA. Dictionaries that compile different subjects such as Economic Law, Leisure, Tourism, Banking, Foreign Trade, Real Estate, Insurances, Linguistics, Pharmaceutical Science, Footwear, Natural Stone or Human Rights.
As a consecuence of the main work developed at the heart of CETIVA, it was created an iniciative to expand and increase the adquired experiences to all modern languages studied at Alicante, Castellón and Valencia. For this purpose, the Inter-university Institute for Applied Modern Languages (IULMA) counts on specialist from different fields (Law, Economics, Pharmacy, Medicine, Computer Science, etc). After the legal process and having a possitive evaluation from the Spanish Agencial Nacional de Evaluación y Prospectiva (ANEP) the 11 March 2005 was published in the Diario Oficial de la Generalitat Valenciana (Valencian Government by Decree 55/2005 of the Consell de la Generalitat the foundation of the Inter-university Institute for Applied Modern Languages, formed currently by three valencian unviersities: University of Alicante, University Jaume I of Castellón and University Valencia-Estudi General.
The three universities work coordinately in those research fields in which they are competent. They have a conciliatory and independent structure that organises academic events (national and international meetings and conferences), agreements with publics and private bodies from an educative, legal (forensic reports), economical, technological, etc perspectives. We can also mention the several research projects given by the Ministry of Education and Science about issues such as the creation of a terminological data base of some valencian industrial sectors, valencian textile and toy industry, tiles sector from Castellón or the intercultural comunication and specific language, to mention some examples. IULMA combine the efforts of a large group of specialists form several languages. They are interested in the applications of the linguistic in a professional and academic environment. Their aim is to offer the society all their knowledge.
The main aim of IULMA is to systematize and spread all the knowledge of modern languages applied in the areas of industry, science, technology, law, heal sciences, etc.
It also has the aim of spreading the investigations and knowledges focused on specialized languages into the different areas that could be interested: professional area, academic area and general area (the professional is the one made in articles or scientific conferences; the academic consists in the transmition of knowledge, interacting between professor and students; and the general is the one of dissemination).
