The PRESEVAL (Project for the Sociolinguistic Study of Spanish in Valencia) research team was born in 1996 within the Val.Es.Co group. (Colloquial Spanish, Valencia). The main aim of PRESEVAL is to identify the characteristic features of spoken Spanish in Valencia, a dialectal variety used by autochthonous speakers or long-term residents who are aware of belonging to this community of speakers. The team, coordinated since its beginnings by Dr. José Ramón Gómez Molina, is made up of professors from the departments of Spanish Philology (Marta Albelda Marco, Marcial Terradez Gurrea and Jorge Roselló Verdeguer) and Language and Literature Teaching of the University of Valencia (María Begoña Gómez Devís), as well as secondary school teachers (José María Buzón García).The reason that led to the creation of the team was our participation in the Sociolinguistics Commission of ALFAL (Association of Latin-Amrican Linguistics and Philology) in 1994 and 1996 to design the methodological foundations of the Project for the Sociolinguistic Study of Spanish in Spain and America (PRESEEA) and its adherence to it. This pan-Hispanic project, coordinated by Dr. Francisco Moreno Fernández, was presented at the 11th ALFAL International Congress, held in Las Palmas in 1996, and there it began its journey. The University of Valencia team was one of the first to be formed and join the PRESEEA, together with the University of Alcalá and El Colegio de México teams. Our team clearly takes on the objectives and methodological guidelines of the pan-Hispanic project (Moreno, 2005: 126) and contributes to the corpus of spoken Spanish in Valencia. The speech samples collected correspond to 72 semi-directed interviews with informants from three socio-cultural levels and with an approximate content of half a million words. This sociolinguistically representative and technically adequate corpus facilitates the identification of the characteristic features of Spanish used by the speakers of this metropolitan area in a semi-formal or neutral communicative register. The benefit of this linguistic material is undeniable for two reasons: a) it allows the formal and functional characterisation of spoken Spanish in the colloquial (Val.Es.Co corpus) and semi-formal registers to be contrasted; and b) it provides reference material for the synchronous sociolinguistic corpora of Spanish integrated in the PRESEEA, which will allow a global panorama of the internal dynamism of Spanish to be formed when carrying out comparative studies of various linguistic phenomena with the corpora of other Spanish-speaking communities, especially urban areas. Likewise, the PRESEVAL team has taken on the scientific coordination of the coordinated project Sociolinguistic Study of Spanish in Granada, Las Palmas, Lleida, Madrid-Alcalá, Málaga and Valencia (Refs. HUM2004-06052-C06-00 and HUM2007-65602-C07-00) in the period 2004-2010. This interuniversity project has created a national network that promotes collaboration in sociolinguistic research, improving the level of research in these teams through the exchange of basic information (analysis techniques, theoretical problems and publications) and enhancing the transfer of the results obtained after the application of homogeneous and contrasted sociolinguistic analysis procedures. In short, it contributes to the development of young Hispanic sociolinguistics. Finally, the publications under the authorship of the various members of the team and their presence at international conferences and seminars on linguistics and philology are documentary evidence of the research activity of the team and its scientific contribution to the development of Spanish sociolinguistics.
