Description of research activity:
From Psychology, and with emphasis on methodology, the main themes or fields of application are: ageing and quality of life; comprehensive palliative care and humanisation of care; innovation and educational quality (commitment, entrepreneurship, employability in graduates with functional diversity, occupational health in education professionals...) and systematic reviews and meta-analyses. The technological offer of the group is based on the development, analysis and technical report of predictive and/or explanatory models based on surveys and opinion studies on issues affecting quality of life. Design and study of the efficacy of interventions in quality of life. Cross-cultural validation, adaptation of measures and creation of surveys and new protocols in the field where there is a lack of the necessary tools. Unique characteristics of this group are its interest in training future researchers in the fields of our research, its commitment to transfer to society and internationalisation. With regard to training, in recent years, numerous PhD theses have been supervised, several of which have been awarded the Extraordinary Doctorate Award. Most of the researchers in the group are competent in coordinating or directing interdisciplinary doctoral programmes (Promotion of Autonomy and Social and Health Care for Dependency) and the Master's Degree in Social and Health Care for Dependency. At the same time, we have experience in teaching in numerous fields focused on cooperation, health promotion and in general the improvement of the living conditions of citizens, such as the Master's Degree in Comprehensive Palliative Care for People with Advanced Diseases (UAB, Barcelona), the Master's Degree in Psychological Rehabilitation in Community Mental Health (UJI, Castellón), Master's Degree in Health Psychology, Master's Degree in Educational and Developmental Psychology in Multicultural Contexts (UV Master in Peru and the Dominican Republic in the context of cooperation), and the Expert Programme in Health Interventions (EVES). Several members of the team have received awards for their quality career (Valencian government and UV Social Council Award, 2015), Award for the transfer to the quality of life of citizens (award from the Valencian Federation of Neighbourhood Associations), national awards for our contributions in the field of vulnerable groups (Prevent Foundation Award, 2012; Asindown Foundation Award in 2017) and also recognition for innovation in care at local level (2nd prize for innovative ideas INCLIVA 2019). Transfer to society is a strong idea in our research initiatives. In addition to the more orthodox conduits of publication in scientific journals and forums, it is disseminated in audiovisual formats (training videos for elderly care: ¿Tú que cuidas, cuídate (Unión de Mutuas)¿ and ¿Buenos Recuerdos sobre Deterioro Cognitivo Leve¿) and apps (under the direction of the director of GESS-in Prof. Navarro-Pérez and in collaboration with IRTIC, the Liad@s app and later the DAP360º programme), but also establishing synergies with the administration, with professional associations and colleges and with neighbourhood movements, participating in working groups and various initiatives. The international projection is deeply rooted, since the different lines maintain ongoing collaborations over time with prestigious centres with renowned academics such as: Kenneth A. Bollen (UNC Chapel Hill), Alistair Cheyne (Loughborough University UK and later at ESSCA School of Management, Bordeaux, France), Barry Schneider (University of Ottawa and later Boston College) or Julian Montoro (UNCC at Charlotte), Shane Sinclair (U. of Calgary), Gustavo de Simone (Pallium Latinoamérica, Buenos Aires), Michael Silberman (Middle East Cancer Consortium, Israel), Tomás Caycho (Universidad Privada del Norte, Lima, Perú), Undergraduate and graduate school at ESAN University, Lima, Perú. Although in the same way we could provide knowledge on the promotion of quality of life in the framework of palliative care, education, humanisation of care... We choose as an example of the clear emphasis in the methodology, of what our group can contribute in the research on the promotion of quality of life, the subject of ageing. This topic is at the intersection of biological, social and psychological processes, and since it is a biopsychosocial model, theories or models about it emerge from all these areas. The ageing process, in addition to the physical-medical aspect, in psychosocial terms speaks of the relationship between individuals, their development in society and the interpretation of the events that happen to them according to the cultural framework. Starting from classical sociological theories, it has led to more psychological models that have described the strategies and ways people use to manage the difficulties associated with ageing in order to achieve well-being (Rowe & Kahn, 1997; Kahana & Kahana, 1996; Baltes & Baltes, 1990; Brunstein, 1993; Diener, Suh, Lucas & Smith, 1999; Rapkin & Fisher, 1992), among others, as well as ¿harmonic¿ models or models based on Eastern perspectives. Our work as a group is, to a large extent, to use the most advanced methodology so that the data from our groups of interest respond rigorously to the questions we pose from the knowledge of all these theoretical approaches and models.

Scientific-technical goals:
  • La investigacion en promocion de calidad de vida, por su caracter aplicado, al trabajar con diferentes colectivos afrontando nuevos retos, problematicas es una constante fuente de conocimiento para el objetivo cientifico-tecnico de identificar nuevas dificultades y como darles solucion. Dado que hay mayor complejidad en los datos e hipotesis, es necesario avanzar con los metodos, muchos procedimientos se han visto insuficientes o han sido superados. Todo este aprendizaje "hands on", esta experiencia como grupo nos permite ofrecer a otros grupos de investigacion apoyo tecnico en diseño y analisis de datos, asi como formacion a la carta en competencias concretas en su ambito de trabajo/investigacion aplicada. Investigar ofreciendo soluciones desde metodologia cuantitativa y cualitativa en ambitos necesarios para la transferencia del conocimiento en area de calidad de vida.
  • Aportar evidencia sobre la idoneidad de diferentes planteamientos teoricos explicativos de la calidad de vida a partir de datos de nuestro propio contexto.
  • Ofrecer informacion, apoyo, consultoria y actualizacion constante especialmente en metodos estadisticos de investigacion complejos, usualmente tecnicas multivariadas con modelos de ecuaciones estructurales.
  • Validar escalas o cuestionarios, intervenciones y protocolos orientados todos ellos a conseguir mejoras en distintos ambitos de calidad de vida tomando como inicio un buen diagnostico.
  • Trabajamos diseñando y llevando a cabo muestreo, pase de pruebas, gestion y depuracion de datos, seleccion, ejecucion e interpretacion de analisis, y preparacion de informe. Todo ello en diferentes entornos como el sanitario, el organizacional en general o el educativo. Por ejemplo en el ambito educativo (infantil, secundaria, bachillerato, universidad, formacion en adultos mayores) la investigacion se orienta tanto al colectivo de estudiantes (variables relacionadas con capacidades, actitudes, compromiso, rendimiento y calidad del aprendizaje..) como al de docentes (compromiso organizacional, burnout, emprendimiento,..) y puede realizarse en una comunidad autonoma, en un pais o en varios con comparacion transcultural. Este tipo de investigaciones en ocasiones son promovidos por agencias de calidad, por organismos internacionales de cooperacion o administraciones publicas con competencias en evaluacion de calidad educativa.
  • Otro objetivo en tanto que universidad publica, es impulsar acciones con compromiso social, apoyandonos en instrumentos como convenios marcos, contratos OTRI, diseño y supervision de aprendizajes de servicio, presencia en foros o grupos de trabajo relevantes en la toma de decisiones. Para esta toma de decisiones desde la administracion, es indispensable contar con informacion rigurosa basada en la evidencia que pueden ofrecer estos estudios cientificos sobre la ciudadania.
  • Algunas de las competencias de nuestro arsenal como grupo para afrontar estos objetivos son: a) Base teorica en constante actualizacion por busquedas sistematicas y presencia en foros; b) Diseño y realizacion de encuestas en papel y online; c) Uso de programas como SPSS, JASP, EQS, Mplus, R.. con un gran rango de metodos de estimacion acordes a la tipologia de datos y necesidades de investigacion. En algunos casos enfoque frecuentista y bayesiano. d) Estimacion, interpretacion e informe de modelos multimuestra, modelos multinivel, modelos multirrasgo-multimetodo y modelos longitudinales, latent growth curve modeling; e) Investigaciones por meta-analisis.
 
Research lines:
  • Envejecimiento y calidad de vida.Biopsychosocial variables aimed at improving the quality of life in the life cycle. José Manuel Tomás' career in the field of his research line is well known. He has co-directed with Amparo Oliver competitive longitudinal projects in the field under the MICIN/AEI/FEDER Challenges call for proposals. Currently in 2021-2022, together with Laura Badenes, he is the Director of the Official Master's Degree in Social and Health Care in Dependency at the Universitat de València. The scientific and technical objectives focus on identifying the variables that most influence the quality of life of the elderly, how they relate to each other and how we can work on them according to theoretical reference models from different cultures. We research both in the field of so-called successful elderly (such as active and healthy people who attend educational programmes for older adults), as well as older people living in community or those who are institutionalised. The research with national and international impact of the team members in this line is reflected in impact journals and includes research collaborations in the field with researchers from our own university, or collaborations with universities such as UNCC Charlotte in the USA, Universidad Privada del Norte in Lima-Peru or the Universidad de Costa Rica.
  • Comprehensive palliative care and humanisation of care.The end-of-life care line began with the participation of Enric Benito and Pilar Barreto in agreements between the UV and the SECPAL (Spanish Society of Palliative Care) to jointly design a measure of spirituality in patients that was clinically, psychometrically and culturally relevant to measure the resources to deal with symptomatology beyond the physical at the end of life. After a decade of productive collaboration, research in this field (EPIONE study) progressed towards intervention (KIBO protocol). On the other hand, always with the emphasis on methodology, the proposal and validation of new measurement tools, research was extended to other relevant topics such as dignity or demoralisation syndrome in patients. The efficiency of interventions on quality of life is designed and studied in patients and their environment as well as in professionals. In the case of professionals, research is carried out not only in the health field, whether in palliative care, intensive care or home care, but also in general in professional activities with high emotional demand, such as care for people with functional diversity, children with developmental disorders or police. There are several interventions based on positive psychology that show effectiveness in reducing stress in professionals with high emotional demand. From ARMAQoL, with an emphasis on methodology and in collaboration with clinical experts from the UV, we investigate the use of different mechanisms and formats of these interventions, making them more appealing, and trying to reduce dropout rates. In professionals, the multicentre YASO study, in collaboration with the UIB (Noemí Sansó, member of the team) was our first incursion into the inner curriculum of palliative care professionals. Nowadays, this research, with a strong theoretical basis, has been consolidated as a diagnostic approach in health systems in numerous countries, in different languages. Currently, in this line, we are developing the project Longitudinal study of compassion and other determinants of professional quality of life: A research on palliative care professionals at national level (CompPal), financed by the State Research Agency - 2018 Calls, R&D&I Projects Research Challenges.
  • Predictive and explanatory models in quality of life.Statistical models usually of structural equation models that explain the interrelationship between key variables to understand the impact of each variable and predict one or more issues of interest with minimal error. Multi-sample models, multilevel models, multitrait-multimethod models and longitudinal models or models with latent growth curve trajectories. These models test invariance in its different phases of expression, they also allow us to approach AFC, path models, covariance structure models, hybrid EFA models, MIMIC models... in other words, they provide us with a great versatility to capture, to model the complex reality of trying to explain the quality of life in citizenship. In this line, researchers of the group based in the area of Methodology of Knowledge Sciences participate the most.
  • Innovation and educational quality.Commitment, entrepreneurship and employability of graduates with functional diversity. In this line, among other subjects, research is being carried out on entrepreneurship, with three PhD theses, two of which have received grants from pre-doctoral training programmes from the Spanish Ministry of Education and the Valencian Department of Education, Valencian government (GVA). We also collaborate with EVAP (Association of Businesswomen and Professionals of València) on this subject and with the team of professor Lorenzo Revuelto, from the Research Group on Human Resources Strategy, Knowledge Management and Innovative and Entrepreneurial Behaviour - RRHHCIRO (UV). A very important part of this line are the collaborations with the Research Group on Social Studies, Intervention and Innovation - GESinn (UV), directed by professor Jose Javier Navarro-Pérez. This involves methodological support in the design, development and evaluation of protocols aimed at diagnosis and/or intervention in essentially vulnerable environments.   • Systematic reviews and meta-analyses.A systematic review is an objective review of a clearly formulated question whose answer requires the integration of the empirical studies that have been carried out on it. Its aim is to systematically and objectively accumulate the evidence obtained in empirical studies on a given problem. Therefore, systematic reviews are secondary studies that synthesise the available scientific information through rigorous and explicit methods, which saves time for health and social care professionals and provides them with an overview of what the scientific evidence suggests about studies in promotion of the life quality.
