Paediatric Dentistry Research Group - GIOP

Reference of the Group:

GIUV2025-650

Description of research activity:
The group's research activity focuses on Paediatric Dentistry. A precompetitive research project carried out between 2008 and 2009 provided the first epidemiological data on Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) in Spain and in the Valencian Community. T his project led to a PhD thesis on MIH in 8 year old children from the Valencian region, as well as an international publication. Between 2012 and 2014, a research and development project funded by FEDER was conducted to investigate potential causal agents of MIH, in collaboration with the INMA Valencia project team. This line of research resulted in a PhD thesis on the relationship between MIH and dental caries, and two publications in international scientific journals. The group also participated in a stu dy on enamel defects in low birth weight children, which established their prevalence and the relationship with pre --, peri and postnatal factors; this work culminated in a PhD thesis and a scientific publication. Another area of research analysed the clin ical effects of nitrous oxide as a behavioural management tool for children with fear or low pain tolerance, leading to a PhD thesis and a scientific paper. From 2014 to 2018, four educational innovation projects (ODONTOPE.TICS I IV) were developed, aimed at incorporating self assessment as a learning strategy in the Paediatric Dentistry course of the Dentistry degree. Additionally, the group collaborated with the University of Murcia on research into the relationship between MIH, intrapartum medication, an d illnesses during the first year of life, resulting in a scientific publication. The group is part of the consolidated educational innovation network EVALAULA, which focuses on improving teaching through assessment, with seven projects carried out between 2011 and 2018. Another line of research focused on the aetiology of childhood sleep bruxism and its association with psychosocial factors, leading to a PhD thesis and an international publication. Finally, the treatment of MIH related defects in anterior teeth has been studied through resin infiltration techniques, culminating in a PhD thesis and two scientific articles currently under editorial review in top quartile journals.
