The 8th Fair-Contest 'Experimenta' on Experiments and Demonstrations in Physics and Technology was held in the Botanic Garden on Sunday, 21 April. It was organized by the Faculty of Physics and aimed at high school students. The competition, which was called for last November, transfromed from 10:00 into a fair open to all audiences in which adults and children could observe and understand surprising phenomena explained by more than 200 high school students involved with 60 different projects.

The fair is an exhibition, in several spaces of the Garden, of pilot physics projects and technology built by students of secondary school and vocational training. Visitors, in addition to enjoying the framework offered by the Botanic Garden of the University of Valencia, will know the experimental work of students and ask all questions that they wish in order to understand its operation and the physical principles on which they are based. In addition, participants can vote for favorite projects. Simultaneously, the workshop Fisicalandia, the little ones can build and understand simple physics demonstrations.

At 13:30, the participants and the audience will move to the Auditorium Joan Plaza of the Botanic Garden where there will be a brief entertainment scientist in charge of a group of students of the Degree in Physics and Awards Contest, chaired by the pricipal of the University of Valencia, Esteban Morcillo.

The Faculty of Physics called for the contest for the first time in 2005, with the aim of involving school students in an active and creative way in the World Year of Physics. The enthusiasm and dedication of the contestants and the response of the visitors were outstanding and were instrumental in transforming this event into an annual fair. The competition is part of a broader set of initiatives aimed at fostering the relationship between the University and secondary education and engage students to science and technology, improving at the same time, the teaching of physics.

Physics is an experimental science that studies the natural world on issues related to energy, matter and their interactions, and on its knowledge depends all the technology that surrounds us daily. It is for this reason that their study is essential for access to all scientific and technological qualifications and further develop activities related to research and innovation. The 'Experimenta' contest aims to promote scientific careers among students and help promote quality jobs in key sectors for development, in which people with degrees in physics work such versatile, capable to solve multidisciplinary problems in science and technology.
