Last Sunday, April 22nd, the fair-contest VII Feria-Concurso Experimenta, about experiments and physics and technology demonstrations, took place at Jardí Botànic. This event, which was organized by Facultat de Física, was aimed at secondary education students. The contest, called last November, transformed itself in a fair open to general public from 10:00. Children and adults were then able to understand some shocking phenomena as they were explained by 150 secondary education students, who collaborated with 40 different projects.
The fair was made up of two elements: an exhibition at the Jardí and the physics and technology experimental projects made by secondary and upper-secondary school students. The public was to be able to enjoy both the Universitat de València’s botanical garden and the students’ experiments. Moreover, they were be able to vote their favourite contestant and experiment. At the same time, the workshop ‘Fisicalandia’ allowed the children to conduct easy physics demonstrations.
At 13:30, public and contestants moved to Auditorio ‘Joan Plaza’ in Jardí Botànic, where a short performance about science was carried out by a group of students in the physics degree and the contest prizes were awarded. The Universitat de València’s Vice-principal for Studies and Language Policy is presiding this event.
Facultat de Física held this contest in 2005 for the first time with the aim of actively and creatively involving the secondary education students in the World Year of Physics 2005. The contestants’ enthusiasm and dedication, as well as the visitors’ response were extraordinay. All these contributed to transform the event in an annual fair. The contest is part of a bigger bunch of initiatives to estrengthen the Universitat and secondary schools’ relationships; it is aimed to involve the students in science and technology subjects, and, to improve, at the same time, the teaching of physics.
Physics is an experimental science which studies the natural world’s aspects related to energy, matter and its interactions. Almost all the daily technology which surronds us is ruled by physics’ principles. That is why its basic knowledge is very important to have a well-informed citizenship. It is also vital to gain access to any scientific and technical degree, and to develop later activities of research and innovation.
