The UV research groups (GIUV) are regulated in the 1st chapter of the Regulation ACGUV48/2013, which explains the procedure for creating new research structures. They are basic research and organizational structures that result from the voluntary association of researchers that share objectives, facilities, resources and common lines of research. These researchers are also committed to the consolidation and stability of their activity, work in groups and the capability to achieve a sustainable funding.

The research groups included in the previously mentioned Regulation are registered in the Register of Research Structures of the Universitat de València (REIUV), managed by the Office of the Vice-principal for Research. The basic information of these organisms can be found in this website.

Research group on Physiopathology, prevention and treatment of eye diseases - FIPTEO

Reference of the Group:

GIUV2018-416

Description of research activity:

Study of the cellular and molecular mechanisms that trigger retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. Approaches for the prevention of the development of these pathologies, as well as therapeutic approaches to the development of advanced stages of the disease. To this end, we consider: To study the role of redox regulation in the development of retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy of age-related macular degeneration. Analysis of the protective role of natural antioxidants in the development of eye diseases related to oxidative stress. Identification of markers in tears to determine and follow the evolution of diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. To study the physiopathology of uveal melanoma, search for new therapeutic approaches and biomarkers for its early detection.

Scientific-technical goals:
  • Estudiar los mecanismos celulares y moleculares desencadenantes de enfermedades retinianas. Prevencion y aproximaciones terapeuticas.

Research lines:
  • Pathophysiology, prevention and treatment of diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration.Evaluation of comparative lipidomic, metabolomic and epigenetic profiles between healthy and diseased patients.
  • Utility of natural polyphenols as preventive agents for the development of eye diseases. To analyse the polyphenolic antioxidant capacity as protection against the development of retinopathies related to oxidative stress.
  • Pathophysiology of uveal melanoma.Development of effective therapeutic approaches that enable both therapeutic avoidance and eradication of the disease before metastasis.
