The UV research groups (GIUV) are regulated in the 1st chapter of the Regulation ACGUV48/2013, which explains the procedure for creating new research structures. They are basic research and organizational structures that result from the voluntary association of researchers that share objectives, facilities, resources and common lines of research. These researchers are also committed to the consolidation and stability of their activity, work in groups and the capability to achieve a sustainable funding.

The research groups included in the previously mentioned Regulation are registered in the Register of Research Structures of the Universitat de València (REIUV), managed by the Office of the Vice-principal for Research. The basic information of these organisms can be found in this website.

Description of research activity:
The objective of the Research Group on Environmental Risk Assessment of Xenobiotics is the study of synthetic substances (biocides, pesticides, drugs, nanoparticles, etc.) with (eco)toxicological effects on ecosystems as a whole and individually on the organisms that inhabit them. In recent years, the study of the effects of substances considered emerging or priority substances and of a new typology of compounds whose properties are not comparable to those of traditional substances, namely nanoparticles, has been of great interest. In this sense, GERAX approaches in an integral way the study of these substances in the environment evaluating the effects on the trophic chains and on the organisms individually in different environments (soils, continental and marine waters, sediments), applying standardized ecotoxicological bioassays (ISO and OECD), batteries of multi-trophic and microcosm bioassays; for this purpose it applies and develops (eco)toxicity bioassays based on the use of indicator organisms. The group is an expert in the assessment of soils contaminated by anthropogenic activities, especially industrial and mining activities, but also by the use of agrochemicals. The growing demand by the EU for the generation of alternative systems to animal experimentation has allowed GERAX to establish collaborations with other research groups and companies that develop computational models designed to predict the (eco)toxicological effect of chemical substances on a multitude of biological targets, in this sense, GERAX participates in the experimental validation of these models designed in silico. The monitoring of environmental pollutants and the study of the impacts on living beings is another important field of study for GERAX, where the experience in the study of mutagenicity, genotoxicity and cytotoxicity in in vivo and in vitro models has allowed to establish the health and environmental risk of these new generation substances.
