This procedure allows doctoral students to request a change in the level of commitment of their doctoral studies, switching from full-time to part-time or vice versa.
The study commitment regime determines the maximum duration of doctoral studies and, consequently, the time available for submitting the doctoral thesis.
In accordance with Article 3, sections 2 and 3, of Royal Decree 99/2011:
a) Students admitted from the 2023-2024 academic year onwards:
Full-time: maximum duration of 4 years.
Part-time: maximum duration of 7 years.
People with a degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%:
Full-time: 6 years.
Part-time: 9 years.
b) Students who began their studies before the 2023-2024 academic year (first transitional provision of RD 576/2023):
Full-time: maximum duration of 3 years.
Part-time: maximum duration of 5 years.

The application must be signed electronically and must have the approval of the supervisor and, if applicable, all thesis supervisors in the case of co-supervision.
b) Processing and decision
The Doctoral School will review the application and forward it to the Academic Committee of the doctoral programme.
The Academic Committee will authorise or reject the request.
If authorised, the Doctoral School will update the new deadline for the submission of the doctoral thesis.
c) Limitations and calculation criteria
The change in commitment can only be authorised once during the doctoral studies.
The calculation of the new duration of studies under the authorised dedication regime will be carried out in accordance with the procedure established in section 3 of the Doctoral Enrolment Instructions, approved by the Permanent Board of the Doctoral School on 1 October 2019.
