In order to make phone calls from the desktop of my PC/MAC/Linux it is necessary to install a SIP telephony system (SIP client) and configure it with the provided data. Once installed, you can call to an internal extension, a corporate mobile phone or also to a known email address that will forward the call to the linked phone.

The use of headphones with microphones is recommended.

Information about UV telephony with SIP.edu

The Universitat de València’s computer network and its internal telephone network allow for telephone calls to be made from SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) clients to its internal extensions.

Any user with an Internet connection and a SIP client (computer or smart phone) can make calls to a telephone extension of the Universitat de València's internal network.

Calling to internal extensions

If you know the internal telephone extension:

All you need is a SIP client and make the SIP call to 'Xxxxx@uv.es' where XXXXX is the internal extension.

NOTE: some clients need the "sip:" before the destination address → sip:XXXXX@

If you know the email address:

To make a call to an internal extension you only need a SIP client and know the recipient's long email address “name.surname@uv.es” (some clients need the "sip:" before the destination address (sip:name.surname@uv.es).

An incoming SIP call to an email address will cause the SIP server to redirect the call to the recipient's corporate phone. This is known as SIP.EDU, an initiative created by Internet2.

It is important to remember to use the email address and NOT the email user.

Receiving calls

To my internal extension:

See previous section (Calling to internal extensions).

To my PC / Mac / Linux computer:

If we have a SIP client such as the recommended LinPHONE and we want to receive SIP calls, we must previously configure it to register in the Universitat de València SIP server.

To make calls, no previous configuration is necessary on most clients, but to receive SIP calls to a computer, one must be registered on the SIP server.

Unlike before, this time we have to use the corporate user and not the long email address to login and receive calls to this address.

user

corporate user of the Universitat de València (ie: the one you use to log in to your e-mail)

password

The corporate one (the same one you use for your e-mail)

domain

 uv.es

server*

sip.uv.es (not all clients need to have this parameter entered, some get it automatically)

Transport UDP
LinPhone Installation

(It is not necessary a VPN connection to make SIP calls).

Depending on the operating system, the versions are not exactly the same, but all versions have the same configuration parameters for our UV account.

On the WELCOME screen select, “USE A SIP ACCOUNT”.

Enter your data as you see on the screen. The parameter 'Transport' must be left as it is, i.e: “UDP”.

Once the account is set up, you will see a box for making calls.

The internal extension can be set numerically: 99999

You can enter the e-mail address (with the user): usuari@uv.es

You can enter the full email address: name.surname@uv.es

Then the calls will go to the physical extension or to the phone on which the user has activated a forwarding, if it is the case.

If you have problems:

With the default configuration, there should not be any problems from outside the UV, however, in the UV, problems can arise in the form of a series of very invasive calls from strange numbers that do not make much sense. Very frequent. If you have experienced this, you have to go to the “Preferences” of the programme, and select “Network”. You need to set this configuration (always in the UV):
