This subject is conceived as an introduction to the different techniques which can be used to access and compile corpora, the research methods in Corpus Linguistics and advances and recent application with the aim of understanding and assessing their potential as tools of analysis in applied linguistics. As well as a critical exploration of a series of publicly-available corpora, our available computer tools will be applied in the exploration and use of linguistic data obtained via computerised corpora. The student will learn how to use the corpora and extract relevant linguistic information from them through computer and statistical programmes, to correctly interpret that information and to store it in adequate databases. In addition, the criteria to follow for the elaboration and labelling of one’s own corpus will be focused on, under the premise that one of the crucial factors to be considered is the long-term planning of the students’ long-term research interests.
