The global system of science is undergoing a significant transformation. While the Global North has long dominated knowledge production, countries across the Global South are playing an increasingly important role. Scientific knowledge has traditionally been produced in English and shaped by Western theoretical frameworks, but alternative research ecosystems, evaluation systems, and publication infrastructures are now emerging.

This shift reflects a broader rebalancing of epistemic power, as more regions seek greater influence over how knowledge is created, validated, and circulated. Efforts to build local capacities and assert knowledge sovereignty are contributing to a more diverse and pluralistic scientific landscape.

Generative AI (GenAI) is accelerating these changes. AI systems are not neutral: they influence which knowledge becomes visible and credible. Many dominant models reflect English-language and Global North–centric data and assumptions, while emerging systems in the Global South increasingly incorporate different linguistic, cultural, and epistemic perspectives. In this context, China represents one among several influential actors experimenting with alternative infrastructures and approaches.
