An online interview is a job interview in which the two interlocutors —interviewee and interviewer— are not in the same physical space, but communicate through a platform online. For its capacity to break the space barrier and save time, this interview format greatly streamlines the selection process and is increasingly being used by companies.

When it comes to preparing for the interview, do it just as you would if it were a face-to-face interview following the advice that we give you in UVjob.

As it is an interview in virtual format, you must take into account its idiosyncrasy, so we give you a series of tips that you shouldconsider to make your interview a success:

1. Check that you have a good connection and that you have an ID on the platform where the interview will take place.

  • Check your username: use a professional username, preferably with your first and last name.
  • If you use headphones you will hear your interlocutor better. Use a discreet headset that does not attract much attention.
  • Body language. Make sure that the camera is framing you from the chest up. That will allow the viewer to read your body language.

2. Choose a suitable place to do the interview. Choose a neutral, well-lit environment that is clean and tidy.

3. Avoid interruptions: If you live with other people, inform them of the time of theinterview to avoid interruptions and noises that may interfere with communication.

4. Dress as you would for a face-to-face interview.

5. Look at the camera instead of looking at the image of your interviewer. This will make you look more interested and will give the impressionthat you are looking into the viewer’s eyes.

6. Have any documents you may need readily available in case you need to share them during the interview. Remember to always send them in PDF.

7. To close the interview, it is important to thank your interviewer for their time, and make sure that you have information on all the steps that will be followed in the selection process.

8. Keep in touch. One advantage of this interview format is that you can get the interviewer’se-mail addressso that you can send an e-mail thanking them, or to follow up on the selection process.
