Logo The CWTS Leiden Ranking 2019 offers information on the scientific performance of 963 universities around the world; these universities have been selected based on their number of publications indexed in Web of Science in 2014-2017. As a novelty in this 2019 edition, two groups of indicators have been incorporated: open access and gender in addition, the previous bibliometric indicators that provide statistics on the scientific impact of universities and on the participation of universities in scientific collaboration.

Access ranking: CWTS Leiden Ranking

This ranking doesn't offer a single classification of universities but a ranking for each indicator considered. Furthermore each indicator can be measured based on a previously selected parameters.In addition each indicator can be measured using a full counting method or a fractional count method. The full counting method gives equal weight to all publications of a university. The fractional counting method gives less weight to collaborative publications than to non-collaborative ones.

Scientific impact indicators
P (number of publications): An interval of 4 years is considered
P(Top1%): publications that, compared with other publications in the same field and in the same year, belong to the top 1% most frequently cited.
P(Top10%): publications that, compared with other publications in the same field and in the same year, belong to the top 10% most frequently cited.
P(Top50%): publications that, compared with other publications in the same field and in the same year, belong to the top 50% most frequently cited.
TCS: The total number of citations of the publications of a university.
TNCS: The total number of citations of the publications of a university, normalized for field and publication year.
Collaboration indicators
P(collb) Collaborative Publications: Number of publications co-authored with one or more other organizations.
P(Int collb): Publications of a university co-authored with one or more countries.
P(Industry): Publications of a university jointly carried out with one or several industrial partners.
P (<100km) Short distance collaboration: The number of publication of a university co-authored with a geographic collaboration distance inferior to 100 km
P(>5.000km) Long distance collaboration>5.000 km: The number of the publications of a university co-authored with one or more institutions located at a distance superior to 5.000 km.
Open access indicators
P(OA): The number of open access publications of a university.
P(gold OA): The number of gold open access publications of a university. Gold open access publications are publications in an open access journal.
P(hybrid OA): The number of hybrid open access publications of a university. Hybrid open access publications are publications in a subscription journal that are open access.
P(bronze OA): The number of bronze open access publications of a university. Bronze open access publications are publications in a journal that are open access without a license.
P(green OA): The number of green open access publications of a university. Green open access publications are publications in a journal that are also available in an open access repository.
P(unknown OA): The number of a university's publications for which the open access status is unknown. These publications typically do not have a DOI in the Web of Science database.
Gender Indicators
A: The total number of authorships of a university. Consider for instance a publication that has five authors, of which three report university X as their affiliation and two report university Y as their affiliation. This publication then yields three aut
A(MF): The number of male and female authorships of a university, that is, a university¿s number of authorships for which the gender is known.
A(unknown): The number of authorships of a university for which the gender is unknown.
A(M): The number of male authorships of a university.
A(F): The number of female authorships of a university.
