Group for research in geometry education and mathematically gifted students - DIDGEOMAC

Reference of the Group:

GIUV2013-095

Description of research activity:
The activity of this group focuses on two main lines of research: Research in geometry didactics: Analysis of the didactic problems of teaching and learning geometry at different educational levels from Primary School to University. At the moment, the activity focuses specifically on: Research on teaching and learning demonstration in mathematics: Study of the problems related to the development of mathematical reasoning skills. Research on teaching and learning geometry in computer environments: Study of the characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of the use of technology (computers, mobile devices) and educational software in geometry classes. Research on the teaching and learning of geometry from the perspective of Van Hiele's model of mathematical reasoning: Application of Van Hiele's model to the evaluation of the level of reasoning of mathematics students, to the design of teaching units and to the methodological organisation of geometry teaching. Research on students with high mathematical ability (HMA): Didactic analysis of several relevant variables in the teaching and learning of mathematics by HMA students. At the moment, the activity focuses...The activity of this group focuses on two main lines of research: Research in geometry didactics: Analysis of the didactic problems of teaching and learning geometry at different educational levels from Primary School to University. At the moment, the activity focuses specifically on: Identification and characterisation of didactic factors that intervene in the teaching and learning processes of students with HMA in Primary and Secondary Education: Study of the styles of reasoning, visualisation, problem solving, affectivity, etc. of students with HMA at different educational levels. Development of tools for the design and analysis of mathematics teaching units for Primary and Secondary Education with differentiated attention to students with HMA: Identification of theoretical elements useful in the creation of tools for analysing teaching materials (textbooks, reinforcement materials, etc.) and for designing teaching units for classrooms.
