The UV research groups (GIUV) are regulated in the 1st chapter of the Regulation ACGUV48/2013, which explains the procedure for creating new research structures. They are basic research and organizational structures that result from the voluntary association of researchers that share objectives, facilities, resources and common lines of research. These researchers are also committed to the consolidation and stability of their activity, work in groups and the capability to achieve a sustainable funding.
The research groups included in the previously mentioned Regulation are registered in the Register of Research Structures of the Universitat de València (REIUV), managed by the Office of the Vice-principal for Research. The basic information of these organisms can be found in this website.

Description of research activity: The group's research activity aims to support the development of microbiological-based biotechnology by offering services to both the scientific community and the business sector. The group is linked to the Spanish Type Culture Collection (CECT), the only public Microbial Resource Centre (mBRC) in Spain that acts as a depository and supplier of bacteria, archaea, yeasts and filamentous fungi and offers microorganism identification and characterisation services, among others. The team of technicians that make up the CECT staff contributes their knowledge and experience in research related to the conservation of bacteria, archaea, yeasts and filamentous fungi; the identification and characterisation of microorganisms using classical microscopy and culture techniques and advanced molecular techniques (NGS, MALDI-TOF, FAME-MIDI); microbial taxonomy and the characterisation of strains to search for or improve biotechnological applications. On the other hand, it addresses the identification, detection and quantification using PCR and massive sequencing techniques of pathogens in food and water, including human enteric viruses and antibiotic-resistant bacteria, as well as their viable/infectious forms (vqPCR), and the validation of qPCR and vqPCR methods for the detection of pathogens in food and water matrices and their adaptation to routine analysis to evaluate the health risk and its involvement in food safety. In this regard, the research group has internationally recognised experts in microbial contaminants of emerging concern, including the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, particularly focusing on the development of new omics and bioinformatics techniques for their identification and characterisation.[Read more][Hide]
