The Agreement continues along the path opened by the Pla d'increment de la docència en valencià (Plan to Increase Teaching in Catalan) towards a more Valencian and more international University.
The Governing Council of the University of Valencia has recently approved a new agreement for the promotion of multilingualism (Acord per a la promoció del plurilingüisme) with the aim of strengthening the balanced use of Catalan, Spanish and foreign languages – especially English – in teaching. This agreement involves an update and expansion of the Plan to Increase Teaching in Catalan (Pla d’increment de la docència en valencià), which will remain in force.
New features of the agreement
- Balanced distribution of languages: the creation of multilingual groups within study programmes is encouraged.
- Promotion of Catalan in postgraduate courses: one of the shortcomings identified was the low presence of Catalan in master's and doctoral degrees.
- Support and recognition: a support system is guaranteed for teaching staff delivering classes in Catalan or English, with specific training and resources. In addition, general percentages are established for valuing language skills in recruitment processes.
- Staff training: a proposal is set out to increase the use of Catalan as a teaching language in courses offered by the Lifelong Learning and Educational Innovation Service (SFPIE).
A step towards language equality and internationalisation
With this agreement, the University of Valencia reaffirms its commitment to language equality and the internationalisation of higher education, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals and the new Spanish Organic Law on the University System (LOSU).
