The members and collaborators of the group have different backgrounds in cultural history research spanning the modern and contemporary eras, and come from a wide range of disciplinary fields. However, they share a specific interest in music production and consumption and, more generally, in the sound dimension of social and political practices. The research group brings together their consolidated experience and seeks to promote the training capacity of young researchers.
The main objective of the group is to analyze the musical dimension of the social, political, and cultural changes that took place in the Mediterranean world between the modern and contemporary ages. To do so, and based on the theoretical and methodological approaches of urban history, it focuses its attention on the case of the city of Valencia, but without losing sight of broader debates or the global and transnational dimensions of these transformations. The research group will reconstruct the phonospheres (or soundscapes) of modern and contemporary Valencia with the aim of analyzing the musical dimension of politics and power relations, the relevance of music in shaping political cultures and forms of social...The members and collaborators of the group have different backgrounds in cultural history research spanning the modern and contemporary eras, and come from a wide range of disciplinary fields. To do so, and based on the theoretical and methodological approaches of urban history, it focuses its attention on the case of the city of Valencia, but without losing sight of broader debates or the global and transnational dimensions of these transformations. The research group will reconstruct the phonospheres (or soundscapes) of modern and contemporary Valencia with the aim of analyzing the musical dimension of politics and power relations, the relevance of music in shaping political cultures and forms of social identification, and its institutional, social, and economic dimension in this period, as well as the ways in which these processes have been interpreted, narrated, and reconfigured over time.
All these processes of change are also addressed from theoretical perspectives and innovative methodologies and from an interdisciplinary approach, and are projected to the present day through the study of memory in the present time of the musical life of those centuries and the need to teach and transmit it to new generations through music education, with specific attention to the ways in which historical-musical knowledge is constructed and transmitted in educational and training contexts.

- Phonosphere and musical repertoires. The research group aims to reconstruct the phonosphere (or soundscape) of modern and contemporary Valencia in its many dimensions. This reconstruction will be accompanied by the recognition and study of preserved repertoires to provide keys for their interpretation in the current context.
- Ceremonial and political uses of music.Music appears as an essential element of the intense ceremonial activity that characterized urban contexts in the Old Regime, but also of forms of popular protest against the authorities. In the transition to the contemporary age, the symbolic value of this presence became charged with political meanings. The project will study the processes that led to this transformation, as well as the uses and importance of music in the political life of that period.
- Music and forms of identification.Music has been a fundamental mechanism in the negotiation of identity among social groups in the modern and contemporary era. One of the group's main lines of research is to explore the relationship between music and national, subnational, gender, class, and religious discourses, as well as its role in shaping the various political identities of the period.
- Historiography and teaching of music history. The study of music as a historical subject is not limited to reconstructing the past, but also involves analyzing how historiographical narratives are constructed, transmitted, and legitimized in educational and social contexts. Therefore, an important line of research is the sociogenesis of historical-musical knowledge, the evolution of historiographical paradigms, and their translation into textbooks, curricula, and teaching materials, from secondary education to university. Special attention is paid to the mechanisms of selection, exclusion, and hierarchization of the repertoire, as well as to the cultural, ideological, and pedagogical implications of teaching the history of music in the Valencian and European contexts.
- Musical institutions and their interweaving with social structures. In parallel with the processes linked to ceremonial uses, the well-known musical institutions of the old regime, ecclesiastical chapels, and civic musicians (minstrels and trumpeters) emerged and consolidated. The transformation and/or disappearance of these institutions throughout the 19th century has not yet been studied in depth.
- Music and society.Music has been a central element of past societies. Drawing on their respective areas of expertise and focusing on the city of Valencia, the group members will analyze its social and economic dimensions. They will study forms of musical patronage, the emergence and development of a music market and of new forms of musical sociability, the importance of music in various forms of ¿popular culture,¿ and its central role in modern and contemporary forms of leisure and entertainment.
- Appreciation of heritage.Approaching the history of music within the framework of cultural history sheds light on the contexts and forms of musical communication during the period under study. The group aims to connect preserved musical repertoires with the occasions and contexts for which they were conceived, as well as how they were received by diverse social audiences. These insights will inform the exegesis and interpretation of Valencian musical heritage in the present day.
