The research group aims to generate knowledge that contributes to understanding the role of the multinational enterprise (MNE) in the face of two fundamental challenges today: (I) analysing how multinationals configure their strategies to adapt to the growing changes in the environment, particularly regarding their social and environmental innovation, and (II) evaluating the impact of their activities and capacity to add value and promote sustainable growth in the institutional and social spheres.
MNEs have become key players globally that must face increasing pressure to reduce the impact and environmental footprint of their activities, given that they operate in countries with diverse regulations and/or expectations from stakeholders such as consumers, NGOs, and society in general. Subsidiaries are in a particularly relevant position since they interact with two environments: on the one hand, their local market, with its own regulations, inequalities, and environmental problems, and on the other hand, the firm's network or global value chain, with dissimilar priorities in its global strategy. Faced with increasing market fragmentation driven by technological disruption and geopolitical shifts, many subsidiaries are attempting to redesign their own strategies and are thus positioning themselves as relevant actors that could and should contribute to and generate opportunities through their actions.
In this context, it is necessary to develop research that analyses the micro-macro links between MNEs-society to understand how they interact with the political, regulatory, and social environment. This includes the determinants and optimal configuration of innovation strategies (e.g., subsidiaries' capabilities and roles, value chain governance), as well as the incentives and expected outcomes (upgrading, innovation and social impact). Our studies are conducted from the perspective of integrated strategy in international business, as subsidiary decisions are shaped by the need to operate also with non-market strategies at the local level, incorporating political actions or corporate social responsibility initiatives, among others. Ultimately, the research group seeks to contribute with new approaches and specific methodologies to assess this global impact, providing tools for practitioners and policymakers to better understand the role of MNEs as catalysts for social and institutional change.
