Description

The Faculty of Psychology and Speech Therapy was originally part of the former Schools of Agricultural Engineering and Agricultural Experts, specifically the School of Agriculture. The complex that included both schools was designed by the architects Fernando Moreno Barberá and Cayetano Borso in 1960. These buildings were constructed to include structures of varying heights, in combination with courtyards and landscaped areas. They combine the various elements used by Fernando Moreno Barberá: the heavy marquee at the entrance –metal, in this case– which is the personal hallmark of Moreno Barberá's work for the university project, concrete latticework to filter the light, adjustable brise soleil elements, etc. These last elements are of prime importance to the design that was conceptualized to adapt to the specific climate of Valencia, which is warm and light.

The architecture is more than simple forms and volumes, and is closely linked to functionality. It is specifically designed to include elements that enhance the comfort and convenience of the facility and the utilization of each of the halls, classrooms, libraries, etc. All of the elements are rendered in great detail in the original scheme. Landscaping is introduced as a way of softening the architecture, and represents an essential element of comfort in the design of the complex.

In his project for the Universitat de València, Moreno Barberá used materials as a primary resource in his representation of modernity, inspired by the avant-garde architectural trends of the moment. The fundamental elements that characterize his work are exposed concrete, concrete block, steel and wood.

The image of the former School of Agricultural Engineering as we see it today is significantly altered as a result of the intervention by architect Miguel Colomina in the 1980s, when an additional floor was added to a section of the main facade.

The Faculty of Psychology has been recognized as a Property of Local Relevance, and is included in the Docomomo Ibérico register, a distinction for the finest Modern architecture in Spain.
