Description

Following the great flood of 1957, during which the original buildings in Calle de la Nave suffered extensive damage, the Universitat de València was faced with the need to expand the buildings on the Blasco Ibáñez campus. The Ministry architect Fernando Moreno Barberá played a prominent role in extending the services, schools and faculties of the Universitat. The buildings constructed on the Blasco Ibáñez campus and the Universidad Laboral de Cheste educational complex are buildings of reference in the introduction of Modern architecture in the city of Valencia and the surrounding area.

The first building designed by this architect for the Universitat de València was the Faculty of Law, currently in use as the Faculty of Philosophy and Education Sciences. Immediately following, Moreno Barberá designed the adjoining Faculty of Philosophy and Letters (now the Faculty of Geography and History) as part of the same complex. The entrance to the Faculty of Philosophy is situated on a broad, slightly elevated perron covered by a heavy marquee, one of the distinguishing characteristics of the architect's designs. The building is structured in several clearly defined sections. An eight-story wing with a curtain wall of glass and metal profile –characteristic of the Modern movement– houses the different departments. Lower wings, occupied by classrooms and the main lecture hall, provide the contrast of volumes and height that give importance and meaning to the whole. The large landscaped area, which is preserved even today, and the different architectural elements that are characteristic of Moreno Barberá's style –latticework on the rear facade and the typical brise soleil structures which are visible from Calle Rodríguez Fornos– form part of the conceptualization of this building. All of these elements are designed in response to the light and climate of Valencia. Moreno Barberá’s buildings for the Universitat de València are among the finest examples of Modern architecture in the city.
