El grup de recerca Vacàlic+ s'interessa per la fonètica i fonologia, la morfologia, la sintaxi, la semàntica i la pragmàtica del català i altres llengües, amb una visió diacrònica i sincrònica. Especialment, els estudis del grup pretenen descriure les diferents varietats de la llengua catalana i d'altres llengües romàniques, així com també explicar els processos de canvi lingüístic de les llengües. Els investigadors s'interessen per processos de canvi fonològic, gramaticalització, lexicalització, d'analogia i reanàlisi, de canvi semàntic, de subjectivació, etc. L'aproximació a aquests fenòmens es realitza tant des d'una perspectiva teòrica com descriptiva o experimental. Apliquen diverses aproximacions teòriques, de diferent filiació, com ara la teoria de l'optimitat, la fonologia de laboratori, la gramàtica cognitiva, la teoria de la integració conceptual, la teoria del prototip, la gramàtica de construccions, la morfologia natural, etc. L'estudi de la llengua en ús és al centre d'aquests estudis i per això la lingüística de corpus i l'estudi del discurs esdevé una metodologia adequada. - Millorar la comprensió dels usos lingüístics i de la seua interacció amb els processos de variació i canvi lingüístic.
- Fer aportacions aplicades de la lingüística a l¿ensenyament-aprenentatge de llengües (gramàtica i fonètica), especialment en contextos de minorització.
- Avançar en la comprensió de l¿ús lingüístic en relació amb les variables sociolingüístiques i les actituds lingüístiques en societats multilingües, especialment en llengües minoritzades com el català.
- Millorar la descripció de la variació fonològica, morfofonòlogica i morfosintàctica del català i d¿altres llengües, i avançar en la comprensió de les causes que originen les opcions documentades, així com els processos de canvi lingüístic.
- Catalan diachronic morphosyntax in the Romance continuum.Description and analysis of Catalan morphology and syntax with a diachronic perspective. The aim is to describe and explain the processes of linguistic change that affect Catalan grammar, such as verbal morphology, demonstratives, quantifiers, clitic pronouns, subordination, etc. The processes of grammaticalisation in the formation of new constructions are also studied.
- Diachronic semantics and lexicology.Study of semantic change especially in (semi)grammatical constructions, such as verbal phrases, evidential markers or lexicalisation processes as in phraseological units. Application of linguistic theories such as prototype theory, cognitive grammar, construction grammar, historical pragmatics, conceptual integration theory or blending to the description and explanation of the Catalan language in the Romance context. Use of corpus linguistics.
- Variation and synchronic linguistic change in Catalan language.Study of semantic change especially in (semi)grammatical constructions, such as verbal phrases, evidential markers or lexicalisation processes as in phraseological units. Application of linguistic theories such as prototype theory, cognitive grammar, construction grammar, historical pragmatics, conceptual integration theory or blending to the description and explanation of the Catalan language in the Romance context. Use of corpus linguistics.
- Catalan neology in the Valencian Country.Study of new words that penetrate the Catalan language, both through the mechanisms of word formation, as well as through semantic change and loaning from other languages.
- Standard Variety and language attitudes.Study of the penetration of standard language in the Valencian Country and related linguistic attitudes, both in grammatical and lexical aspects, considering functional variation and legislative proposals.
- Linguistics and teaching-learning process.Study of the applications of theoretical linguistics in teaching and learning of Catalan and Spanish as a first or second language or as a foreign language. Methodological applications in the teaching and learning of grammar and the acquisition of linguistic skills, especially with the use of applied cognitive construction grammar, but also with applications to improve the teaching of phonetics. Production of classroom instruction experiments in collaboration with language teachers to obtain empirical evidence of the validity of the proposals made. Studies on the relationship between linguistic attitudes, sociolinguistic phenomena and the use of Catalan and other languages in secondary and baccalaureate education.
- Sociology of language.Study of the relationship between Valencian society and the use of the Catalan language in different areas. Description of the uses of Valencian and Spanish in society. Study of the social, demographic and ideological factors and variables that explain the levels of knowledge and uses of Valencian in the Valencian Country.
- Phonetics and Phonology of Catalan and other languages.Description of vowel and consonant phenomena in Catalan that show dialectal variation, both from a theoretical and experimental point of view. Study of interface phenomena between phonology and other components such as morphology or syntax. Application of Optimality Theory to formalize the similarities and differences between the systems of the languages under study.
- Demolinguistics.Study of the relationship between basic demographic factors, such as age, sex and place of birth, and levels of knowledge and use of Valencian. Study of the evolution of the knowledge and use of Valencian according to national linguistic censuses and official surveys of the Regional Government of Valencia. Analysis of the factors that condition the reproduction of languages (intergenerational transmission and second socialisation, linguistic integration of immigrants and level of linguistic attraction or new speakers).
