The UV research groups (GIUV) are regulated in the 1st chapter of the Regulation ACGUV48/2013, which explains the procedure for creating new research structures. They are basic research and organizational structures that result from the voluntary association of researchers that share objectives, facilities, resources and common lines of research. These researchers are also committed to the consolidation and stability of their activity, work in groups and the capability to achieve a sustainable funding.

The research groups included in the previously mentioned Regulation are registered in the Register of Research Structures of the Universitat de València (REIUV), managed by the Office of the Vice-principal for Research and Scientific Policies. The basic information of these organisms can be found in this website.

Pragmatics and Conversational Language in Ancient Greek and Latin - PRAGMÁFANES

Description of research activity:
The PRAGMÁFANES research group establishes its primary objective and field of study as the conversational language of Ancient Greek and Latin, placing particular emphasis on dramatic texts (Comedy, Tragedy, and Satyr Play). These are conceptualized as privileged loci for the analysis of verbal interaction within dialogic contexts. Concurrently, the group extends its investigative purview to other genres such as oratory, Platonic dialogues and the like (Lucian of Samosata, for example), wherein conversational and dialogic components are manifest to varying degrees. The group adopts an integrative linguistic and philological framework, synthesizing syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic analyses with the most recent advancements in the fields of linguistics and pragmatics. Scientific-technical goals:
  • To develop an updated methodological model for the analysis of conversational language in Ancient Greek and Latin, integrating philological, pragmatic, and discourse-based perspectives.
  • To systematically analyse the linguistic mechanisms of verbal interaction in ancient drama and other dialogic genres, with particular attention to verbal politeness and impoliteness, pragmatic attenuation and intensification, face management; and the linguistic expression of verbal humor.
  • To analyse and reinterpret markers of fictionalized orality, identifying pragmatic functions in situ rather than through mere lexical lists.
  • To contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between language, communicative action and scenic and situational context in Ancient Comedy and Tragedy.
  • To apply research results to the translation, editing and commentary of classical texts, as well as to innovation in university teaching, promoting an understanding of grammar that integrates syntax, semantics, and pragmatics.
  • To promote interdisciplinary collaboration and the transfer of knowledge to other fields of study and to society.
