The work is a collective work in which the basic legal terms used in Law studies and in other branches of Law and Social Sciences.  The work has academic and social relevance because it is the first terminology base with these characteristics that is in Catalan and Spanish.

The legal vocabulary is born thanks to the Faculty of Law of the University of Barcelona and the Faculty of Law of the Universitat de València. Specifically, this vocabulary appears from the sum of the previous initiatives by the language policy committees, which tasked specialist professors the elaboration of vocabularies for the different legal areas. Behind it, there is an important work of selection, terminological doubts solving and criteria unification, which was carried out with the support of the language services of the University of Barcelona and the Universitat de València, with a very satisfactory result.

The vocabulary follows multiple objectives, according with the diversity of its recipients. In the first place, it intends to contribute to the normal use of Catalan in the university, making it easier to solve terminological doubts for the students and the professors. In the second place, and in a growing context of mobility and internationalisation of our universities, it also covers the need of facilitating the knowledge of the legal language in Catalan for the exchange students. Finally, and beyond the academic field, the work can be useful for other jurists or people who are in contact with this specialty language.

The satisfaction of seeing the words of law all together, as a main tool for the jurist, surpasses the immediate utility of this vocabulary and opens the doors for future and more ambitious initiatives in the line we have started. Finally, it is necessary to thank all the people who have collaborated in its elaboration and publishing.
