1. Where can I find all the information regarding the submission, evaluation and defence of the PhD thesis?

The Universitat de València has regulations on the submission, evaluation and defence of PhD thesis.

2. Is there an alternative to the conventional PhD thesis?

Yes, it is possible to submit a PhD thesis by compendium of publications. The requirements and necessary additional documentation can be found in Article 8 of the regulations on the submission, evaluation and defence of PhD theses.

3. I would like to write my thesis in another language... What do I have to do?

The thesis can be written and defended in the usual languages of the scientific community in your field of knowledge. The additional documentation required is detailed in Article 7 of the regulations on the submission, evaluation and defence of PhD theses.

4. If my PhD thesis is subject to processes of protection and transfer of technology and/or knowledge... What do I have to do?

You have to follow the authorisation, reading and publication procedure regulated in Article 10 of the regulations on the submission, evaluation and defence of PhD theses.

5. What happens if have I not completed my thesis within the established deadline?

If you exceed the time limit foreseen in the programme without having applied to deposit your PhD thesis (see question I.9), you will have to request the Academic Committee for an extension. To do this, you have to submit a reasoned report that will have to count with the approval of your thesis advisor and/or supervisor. The usual deadline for requesting an extension is from 1 to 25 July.

6. In order to obtain the title of Doctor with International Mention, can the two experts who have to report on the thesis belong to the thesis examining board?

Yes, as these experts must not be in any case the supervisors of the three-month stay at the international host institution.

7. Is a three-month stay valid to obtain the title of Doctor with International Mention if I have not been enrolled in the PhD programme?

No, it is not. In order to obtain the International Mention, the stay must be carried out while you are enrolled in the programme as academic supervision with the status of PhD student.

8. What is the deadline of the PhD thesis defence for PhD students belonging to PhD programmes prior to the Royal Decree 99/2011?

  • PhD students belonging to the RD 185/1985, 778/7998, 56/2005 and 1393/2007 (thesis project enrolment prior to 11 February 2011) have until 11 February 2016 to defend their thesis.
  • PhD students belonging to the RD 1393/2007 (thesis project enrolment between 11 February 2011 and 30 September 2013) have until 30 September 2017 to defend their thesis.
