The University of Valencia (UV) has been ranked among the best in the world in the QS Sustainability Ranking ® university ranking, which classifies 1,403 of these centres through governance, environmental and social impact. Specifically, the institution ranks 71st in the world in governance, which evaluates transparent decision-making, an ethical organisational culture, student representation in governing bodies, and financial transparency.
To weight the institutional result of each centre, this ranking takes into account, in addition to governance (with a weight of 10% of the total), the social impact (45%), which evaluates the effort and commitment to equality, employability and partnerships with industry and improving wellbeing and health. In this section, the UV occupies the world position 168 (up from 212 in 2022).
The environmental impact is also measured, which includes education and research indicators, and sustainable environment through strategies and operations aimed at a more sustainable future (45% of the total weighting), where the University of Valencia has improved 257 positions in one year, until reaching 234th place in the world.
With these figures, the University of Valencia is the first centre in the Valencian Community, a position it already occupied in the 2022 edition; it reaches 7th place in the whole of the Spanish state (12-14 last year); It has been ranked 70th in Europe (157-159 in the previous edition); and moves to position 159 in the world (for the range 341-360 in 2022). This improvement in all results has occurred in the context of the increase in the number of centres participating in the ranking, which has gone from 700 in 2022 to 1,403 in this edition.
According to Pilar Serra, vice-rector for Sustainability, Cooperation and Healthy Living at the University of Valencia, these results emerge from all the work carried out in the institution to incorporate ethical and sustainable criteria into the public purchasing procedures of the University, which has had a direct impact on internal governance systems. Furthermore, “intense work has been done on sustainability, which has fundamentally influenced the decarbonisation of the institution, the improvement of energy efficiency and the promotion of fair and local trade, and the promotion of healthy lifestyles. This puts us on the right path to continue improving year after year, to try to contribute to a more sustainable and healthy planet”, highlighted Pilar Serra.
This ranking is led by the universities of Toronto, California (Berkeley) and Manchester, while in Spain, by the University of Barcelona, Complutense of Madrid and the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
