  • Observatory of Rankings

The CYD Ranking has published its new edition on 22 May 2019, elaborated by the Knowledge and Development Foundation that made the decision of starting a project for the elaboration of indicators for the Spanish University System. U-Multirank was incorporated to this project promoted by the European Commission and that developed, with the same methodological approach, the CYD ranking for the Spanish universities.

The CYD ranking offers an information tool addressed to different users:

  • to students so that it helps them decide where to study
  • to the university administrators so that it makes it easier to make decisions and
  • to the firms and other social agents to provide valuable information

This web tool offers to users several options: creating your own ranking and consulting information on the universities according your preferences and interests.

Data sources

The indicators system uses two main information sources:

1.    Statistical data.
2.    Students survey.

1. The statistical data come from:

1.1. The universities that provide the statistical data through a web platform where they introduce a questionnaire.
1.2. The Integrated Information System University (SIIU) of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport (MECD)
1.3.  Bibliometric data obtained from the Web of Science and that are provided for the CYD Ranking by the U-Multirank.
1.4.  Patent data obtained from the Patstat databases of the EPO-Worldwide Patent Statistical Database of the European Patent Organisation and that are provided for the CYD Ranking by the U-Multirank.

2. Students’ survey.

It was requested to students, through a survey, to fill in an online questionnaire. Once the questionnaires have been completed and having reached the reporting threshold in the response rate, the results obtained are included in the ranking. In this third edition, the response rate of the survey distributed to students has not made possible analysing the results for the six fields of this third phase.

Also, the CYD Ranking allows for carrying out comparisons at two levels:

  • Institutional level. Apart from offering information as a whole, it also offers a vision of the diversity of institutional profiles.
  • Fields of expertise level. It is the consistent aggregation of undergraduate and master’s degrees that due to their homogeneity level form a determined thematic area. In other words, it is the grouping of academic qualifications that share similar characteristics in terms of subject of study and of career guidance. In this third edition, following the established pattern by U-Multiranking, the fields of knowledge have been adapted to the 2013 ISCED classification and the Integrated Information System University (SIIU).

Dimensions and indicators of the ranking

The indicators system of the CYD Ranking is organised in 6 dimensions: (1) teaching and learning, (2) research, (3) knowledge transfer, (4) international orientation, (5) contribution to regional development.

Each dimension has their corresponding indicators. More detailed information on the indicators is available here:

Expression of results

The results for each indicator are expressed in three performance group, high, intermediate and reduced, whenever there are a sufficient number of universities. The three groups are pointed out with different colours: green, yellow and red.

Even though it is not a ranking that offers an only position for each university, it does order according to the number of indicators with high, intermediate and reduced performance.

You can consult the following classifications that offer the results by indicators:

1. Results by the set of universities of each autonomous community
2. Results by indicators in universities
3. Results by indicators in each area of knowledge.
