The Faculties of Law and Economics, located on the Tarongers campus, were designed by the architects Vicente González Móstoles and Alejandro Pons Romaní as identical buildings in terms of volume and spatial organization. The initial project was based on the concept of department or field of knowledge described in the new university model provided for in the University Reform Act (LRU), in force at the time, rather than on the faculty that it would eventually become. This explains the original name of East Department Building, which in addition to the departments pertaining to the Faculty of Economics, also housed the Sociology Department.
The new university building was designed with a parking basement, a ground floor, a mezzanine level and five additional floors. The ground floor occupies a rectangular area divided longitudinally into two sections. The south section is a large, open hall, while the northern half of the floor houses the common areas and university services such as the secretary's office, assembly hall and cafeteria. The dean’s office, boardroom and other meeting rooms occupy the mezzanine level.
The five floors are based on a logical comb-shaped structure, with a longitudinal hall from which users can access seminar rooms, offices and other department-related services. Six additional perpendicularly situated structures house faculty offices located on either side of a central corridor, which connects to the main axis. Also connected to the main axis are the vertical access areas in the form of a quadrangular prism. One of the sides is composed of translucent glass blocks, affording plenty of natural light to the area.
These monumental buildings are characterized by the repetition of elements and the use of clean and simple forms—an architectural language similar to the Neoclassical style with basic geometric shapes, an austere compositional rhythm and uniformity. This classical rigor organizes the visible space of the façade through a series of windows. The contrast of light and shadow during daylight hours gives an even greater impression of volume.
