Reading and language development in an atypical population. - ATYPICAL

Reference of the Group:

GIUV2023-587

Description of research activity:

Our research activity focuses on the analysis, from both a cross-sectional and longitudinal evolutionary perspective, of the difficulties in the acquisition of oral and written language frequent in sensory deficits such as hearing impairment and various neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and intellectual disability (ID). We are interested in the evaluation and optimisation of: -Reading comprehension in children and adults with hearing deficits.-Reading in the population with intellectual disabilities with a focus on "Easy Reading".-Speech perception and oral narrative comprehension in children with neurodevelopmental disorders.-The processing of figurative language in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and auditory deficits. For these purposes, we develop experimental paradigms that allow us to take both execution and process measurements (eye movements).

Scientific-technical goals:
  • Explorar las trayectorias evolutivas del lenguaje oral y escrito en trastornos del neurodesarrollo y sordera para fundamentar la intervencion

Research lines:
  • Reading comprehension in children and adults with hearing deficits..In this line, our aims are the evaluation and development of programmes to improve reading comprehension in children and adults with hearing deficits. Examples of intervention programmes developed by the group are SIMICOLE and LEECOM.
  • Easy reading in the population with intellectual disabilities..In this line, our aims are the evaluation and development of programmes to improve reading comprehension in children and adults with intellectual disabilities, focusing on "easy reading" techniques. We have developed the Critical Reading on the Internt Training Programme (LECRIT).
  • Speech perception and oral narrative comprehension in children with neurodevelopmental disorders..This line seeks to identify the evolutionary trajectories of narrative language acquisition in children with neurodevelopmental disorders through cross-sectional and longitudinal designs, seeking behavioural and physiological markers that nurture early detection and intervention.
  • Figurative language processing in ASD and hearing deficits. This line focuses on the study of figurative language processing during reading in ASD and auditory disorders. Through reading paradigms combined with eye movements and EEG, we analyse processing of a specific type of figurative language: idioms.
