Objectives

  • To promote philosophical exercise by the students of our community.
  • To establish a competition in which all the elements of philosophical debate, reflection and criticism are included in relation to an aspect that appears in the curriculum of the subject.
  • To link philosophical reflection to contemporary problems of a social, political, epistemological or ontological nature.
  • To recognise the work carried out by secondary school teachers and to foster their relationship with the University.

Participants

The Local Phase of the Philosophy Olympics 2024 will be open to all students from 1st and 2nd year secondary schools in the province of Valencia. Each student will be supported by a teacher from their school. Participation is individual and each school can have a maximum of 10 students per teacher.

Test and development

The test will consist of students writing a philosophical dissertation related to the specified topic, based on a guiding question or a fragment that will be proposed at the time of the test. Students will have 90 minutes to write their dissertation.

Topic: What is leisure?

Participation System

LOCAL PHASE: Friday, January 26, 2024, at 10 a.m. at the Faculty of Philosophy and Educational Sciences.

For each local phase a maximum of 5 dissertations will be selected for the regional phase:

  • Expression and literary quality of the dissertation (2 points)
  • Structure and argumentative coherence (4 points)
  • Originality of approach and relevant philosophical contribution (4 points)

ATTENTION: The finalists and their tutors will be notified of the results of the local phase. It will also be announced on the website of the Delegation of Incorporation.

Autonomic Phase: March 2024

  1. Public presentation: presentation of the dissertation that will fundamentally measure the public speaking skills of the speakers, always highlighting the argumentative strength of its content in relation to the thesis being defended.
  2. Questions/answers: questions and answers that serve to assess the ability to defend theses and arguments, to raise criticisms and the ability to counter-argue.
  3. An evaluation committee will be formed by professors from the collaborating entities and associations and from the three Universities that promote the Olympiad: UV, UJI, UA. The evaluation committee will follow the presentations to the end and then give the evaluation.
  4. The winner will take part in the Olimpíada Filosòfica d'Espanya (OFE). The collaborating entities will provide travel expenses for the winners and the prize for the national phase will be the one established by the OEF (Olimpiada Filosófica de España).

Study grants for winning students

The student who is the winner of the Olympiad will receive a study grant of €1000. This grant will only be awarded if the winning student has enrolled in the first year of a degree course at a centre belonging to the Universitat de València.

The study grants obtained are personal and non-transferable and can be made effective in the two academic years following their award. If the student has been the winner of the local phases of one or more Olympiads, either successively or simultaneously, he/she can apply for a single study grant for a single degree course at the Universitat de València.

Each collaborating institution will award the prize it determines.
