Objectives

  • To stimulate interest in the knowledge of geosciences among young people.
  • To reward academic effort and excellence.
  • To disseminate Geology and serve as a meeting point between secondary education and the University.

​Participants

The Geology Olympics of Valencia (GEOLVAL 2025) will be open to all students from schools in the provinces of Valencia and Castellón, enrolled in high school or 4th year of ESO (ATTENTION: see section STUDY AID FOR GUIDING STUDENTS), during the academic year 2024-2025, who have not reached 19 years of age before 1 July 2025 (born on or after 1 July 2006). A maximum of 12 students per school may apply.

Winners of previous editions of this territorial phase of the Olympiad, or those who have replaced the winners to represent Valencia in the National Phase, will not be able to participate; this restriction will not apply if they won in the previous edition as 4th year ESO students (see section STUDY AID).

Date and Place 

Friday, January 24, 2025, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The presentation will take place in the Charles Darwin Room of the University of Valencia, Campus of Burjassot; The theoretical test will be carried out in the same room and in the Classroom-Seminar of Geology, and the practical test will be carried out in the laboratories of building A of the Faculty of Biological Sciences.

Contents and tests

There will be a theoretical test (50 multiple-choice questions) related to the contents of Geology of the 1st year of Batxillerat, and a practical test on the identification of minerals, rocks (10 hand samples) and fossils (1 hand sample) which will also include an interpretation of a geological landscape or a simple geological outline (profile), the student will have to answer 3 questions (type of relief, formation environment, structures, modelling agent,. ..).

For the tests, both theoretical and practical, there will be versions of the questions in Spanish and Valencian.
