"From chroniclers to carbon 14: a journey through Valencian archaeology through books" was inaugurated last Friday in the La Nau Building, in combination with 'Past and present. 100 years doing archaeology at the University'. The two exhibitions are held on the occasion of the centenary of the Department of Archaeology of the University of Valencia.
The exhibition 'From chroniclers to carbon 14: a journey through Valencian archaeology through books' invites visitors to embark on a journey through Valencian archaeology with the help of sixty-one works that mark, in general terms, the process of formation of this discipline. The exhibition, which is organised by the Vice-Rectorate for Research, the Department of Prehistory, Archaeology and Ancient History and the University's Historical Library, is curated by professors Ferran Arasa i Gil, Emili Aura Tortosa and Consuelo Mata Parreño and can be visited in the library's Duc de Calàbria room until 1 May. The exhibition contains a selection of the collections kept, for the most part, in the Historical Library, but also from other libraries of the Universitat de València and the Museu de Prehistòria de València.
Among the selected works, there are copies from the 16th to 20th centuries that guide us through time, from the first testimonies provided by historians and travellers in the 16th century with the first mentions of inscriptions, monuments and numismatic and sculptural finds from the Roman period, to the beginnings of Valencian scientific archaeology in the 20th century.
