The libraries of the University of Valencia offer specific support to the editors of UV scientific journals. On these pages you will find information on the different aspects of scientific publishing.
OJS (Open Journal System) is the system offered by the University of Valencia to its members for the publication of scientific electronic journals. It allows complete editorial management with free software. If you are a publisher of the UV, you can request registration for your magazine through Biblioteca Respon. Turia is the open access journal portal where the publications are hosted.

The ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) is an internationally recognized numerical code that allows the precise identification of the serial publication, published in any medium, to which it is associated.
The assignment of the ISSN number can be done when the publication is in progress, stopped or before its printing. In addition, it is necessary to apply for a new ISSN when there is a significant change in the name of the publication.
The application for the ISSN is made through the Centro Nacional Español del ISSN. You must complete the application form and meet the specific requirements depending on the type of publication:
- Application for existing publications
- Request for publications before the edition (without electronic identification, with electronic identification)
- Application for online publications. In this case it is necessary to have a URL address of the publication (without electronic identification, with electronic identification)
DOI (Digital Object Identifier) is a unique and permanent identifier for electronic publications. It provides information on the description of digital objects (jorunals, articles...) and their location on the internet, through metadata (author, title, publication data...). Journals published on the UV's OJS platform can request a DOI through Biblioteca Respon.
The DOI is managed with the Crossref agency. This number is composed of a common prefix for all UV digital objects and a suffix with a pattern common to all journals. Once a DOI has been assigned to an article, it cannot be modified.
The Library and Documentation Service (SBD) will bear the cost of DOIs for new published issues. The assignment of historical DOI numbers will be evaluated with each journal.
Obligations of journal editors
- Include the DOI number in the PDF of the article that is uploaded to the OJS, in a visible place on the first page following the scheme <https://doi.org/numeroDOI>.
- Use the DOI number to cite articles published in your journal.
- Check that the bibliographic references of all published articles include DOI numbers, if they are assigned. These will be referenced following the scheme <https://doi.org/numeroDOI>. To make this check, the Crossref agency has an online form where you must first register. In the PDFs it will be necessary to check that the links are operational and link to the pages of the referenced articles.
- Fill in, in accordance with the nomenclature proposed by the SBD, the public identification fields in the OJS, both in the number data and in each of the articles in the summary. These data cannot be modified once the number has been published.
- Communicate to the SBD the new numbers published. Once reported, the SBD will take care of the procedures at Crossref in order to activate the assigned DOIs. This step is essential, as otherwise the DOI numbers are not operational. We suggest that before publishing the issue you contact the SBD to check that no errors have occurred.
- Never modify your OJS configuration settings or reassign DOI numbers. Once assigned, they cannot be changed.
- Correct, within one week, the errors that are reported from Crossref.
The editors of scientific journals need to know the quality requirements established in the different schemes of institutions, bodies, databases, etc. so that their journals obtain recognition in their field of research in the evaluation and selection processes.
