Culture. Strategy for local development, is the work of a team consolidated in the research on the relationship between culture and territory and which defends an idea that is gradually gaining ground among experts: the competitiveness of a territory is increasingly dependent on the management model of its symbolic dimension, i.e. the set of meanings that permeate the territory. In its different chapters, the book sets out, among other things, how this relationship between culture and development takes shape, what the framework for action of cultural policy is, what Agenda 21 for culture means as a regulatory framework for cultural policy, what the Local Cultural System is, and what...

In its different chapters, the book sets out, among other things, how this relationship between culture and development takes shape, what the framework for action of cultural policy is, what Agenda 21 for culture means as a regulatory framework for cultural policy, what the Local Cultural System is, and what specificities entrepreneurship in culture has to offer. A long journey that shows us the multidimensionality of social phenomena, especially those linked to culture. The authors of the present work, who start from the Economics of Culture paradigm, firmly believe in this main idea and develop both theoretical frameworks and recommendations for specific policy models, with the aim of intelligently managing the cultural capacities of a territory. Their recommendations come from a practice developed over the last 10 years in the analysis and diagnosis of cultural intervention models at the local level. As the authors point out, "the cultural defines an effective and hopeful new frontier in the field of development".

This article summarizes the contributions from the area of studies referred to as the economy of culture, a sub-discipline of economics recognized by the Journal of Economic Literature, to research on social realities involving culture in the Valencia Country—a subject closely allied with communication. From this standpoint, the present article focuses on research of the mid-1990s coming from a) a strictly academic context, b) sector and territorial project plans in which culture is incorporated in a meaningful way, c) studies derived from an educational context aimed at culture management, d) from conferences or similar events. In conclusion, and granted the contradiction, it must be said that the history of research in the economy of culture in the Valencia Country is very recent, despite the large public investment in cultural infrastructures, and is limited even at present to a small group of researchers mainly from the Universitat de Valencia.

Management of Cultural Organization: The Specific Case of Museums.

    Rausell-Köster, Pau Asuaga, Carolina

    (2006). Article

Museums as an institution have been approached from various disciplines. Economics, or more precisely the Economy Applied to Culture, has made museums susceptible to study using the instruments of economic analysis, leading to the emergence of an area called the Economics of Museums. However, the Management Account has shown no greater interest in the Museum as a subject of study, even when the notion of museum as a guardian of public heritage passed to the conception of the museum as a business, with highly commercial products and with a focus more on the visitor than on collections. This article aims to present some peculiarities of museum management, especially those arising from the definition of the museum mission and the conflict of interests surrounding the various agents involved, whether the state as a provider of funds, the community, the visitor, the directors, in addition to those contributing to the process of value creation in the art market such as artists, gallerists, collectors, critics, curators and other experts. It concludes that the design and implementation of management control tools, consistent with each institution and consolidating the different perspectives of all the actors involved, will provide the institution that creates it, a fundamental tool for monitoring its management and achieving its objectives.

Cultural sectors as a strategy for territorial development in the Valencian central regions.

    (2006). Informes

ELS SECTORS CULTURALS COM ESTRATÈGIA DE DESENVOLUPAMENT TERRITORIAL A LES COMARQUES CENTRALS VALENCIANES1 ..

The uniqueness of this proposal lies in the resolute commitment on the part of those involved designers and authors of the project, Nestor Novell and Elisabeth Delios, that the cultural sectors and therefore culture could be relevant elements in the definition of a space. We firmly believe in this perspective and believe that, within the framework of the new globalised information society, cultural production and its distribution model are really key elements in defining levels of competitiveness and in the long-term sustainability of territorial spaces. If this is true for any space, it is even more true for the territory they call Central counties, since it is a space that until very...

If this is true for any space, it is even more true for the territory they call Central counties, since it is a space that until very recently constituted no administrative unit, but which internalised some speech of cultural homogeneity and even enjoyed a certain legend – otherwise unobjective – of “power” in cultural production within the framework of the Valencian Community. Historical reasons, certain unique cultural experiences since the recovery of democracy there in the mid-1970s, and also the will of some cultural agents had inspired this contrasting speech. With this intentionality, our analysis links culture and territory into three main nodes: 1) culture as an element of territorial cohesion, 2) the relationship between culture, economic growth and employment, and 3) culture as a defining factor in the quality of life of its citizens

València: Publicaciones Econcult , 2006. Article

Los usos del Jardín del Turia.

Parks are all public spaces in the sense that they provide a place for anyone to use for rest, relaxation or recreational purposes in an environment of effective individual or collective interrelationship under conditions of certain security. (Low, Taplin, Scheld, 2005, pág 3). Open spaces and urban parks have become essential elements in the development of cities practically since the beginning of urban planning. The park thus becomes a wide-spectrum vaccine that prevents space from the stress of urban life, softens the aggressive asphalt and cement landscape and recycles, converts and purifies noise and gases from motorisation and pollution.

What can economics have to say about children's and young people's literature?

    Rausell-Köster, Pau

    (2006). Article

Primeras Noticias De Literatura Infantil Y Juvenil.

This work aims to show what economics' possibilities are for interpreting the phenomenon of children's and children's literature. In this regard, we must talk about a double approximation: a) a more restricted view of the economy in which the characteristics of children's and young people's books as a product b) an approximation as a rational choice theory from which one can attempt to explain the decisions of creators, distributors and consumers of children's and youth literature. Finally, from this second perspective too, a vision is presented on policies for promoting reading. All in all, therefore, we call on the ability and the opportunity of the economy to analyse in greater depth all those social facts that relate to the practice and dissemination of culture in general, and to the analysis of children's and youth literature in particular.
