Specialised databases These are the databases accessible from the website of the library where you can find information on language and literature:

  • Traces: a bibliographic database of Catalan language and literature, produced by the Grup d'Estudis Contemporary Catalan Literature (GELCC) UAB, with 87.000 records (April 2013) and is free public access.
  • BILICAME: Corpus bibliogràfic digital de la literatura catalana de l'Edat Mitjana. This database aims at developing a comprehensive digital bibliographic corpus of medieval Catalan literature, free online consultation and will be updated annually.
  • Boletín Bibliográfico de la Asociación Hispánica de Literatura Medieval. It includes all publications (editions, critical literature in book, article and digital) on issues concerning them Spanish, Catalan and Galician-Portuguese tradicions.
  • BITRA: Bibliografía de Interpretación y Traducción. This database contains over 63,000 referencais of books, articles, theses, etc. about this research area.
  • In Principio: Incipit Index of Latin Texts: contains 1 million of incipits which cover Latin literature in all genres, from the pre-classic period until the Renaissance.
  • Teatre Espanyol del Segle d'Or (TESO): fundamental plays from 16th and 17th centuries, in publications preferably collected by the authors or under their direction. It contains more than 800 written pieces by 16 playwrights. The selection of publication has tended to contemporary authors, avoiding the factitious ones and it gathers the publications scattered in different European libraries. Each work is transcribed in its totality, including the preliminary: approvals, censorship, privileges, etc.
  • Early English Books Online (EEBO): 135,000 titles published in England between 1473 and 1700: monographs, manuscripts, pamphlets, sheet music, maps, posters, etc.
  • Early English Prose Fiction: collection of over 200 works between 1500 and 1700 of the genre of prose fiction.
  • Editions and adaptations of Shakespeare:the 11 publications more important from the First Folio to the Cambridge publication of 1863-66. And 24 contemporary publications of apocryphal selected works and works related and more of 100 adaptations, sequels and burlesques of the 17th, 19th and 20th centuries.
  • Eighteenth Century Fiction: 96 complete fiction works between 1700 and 1780, of English writers.
  • English drama: collection of over 3, 900 works in verse and prose, which show the development of English drama from the medieval mystery cycles to the comedies of Oscar Wilde.
  • Bible in English: contains 20 versions of the Bible, and other sacred texts. The content has been selected in order to cover a complete chronological period for researchers from different disciplines.
  • Literary theory: full text database on history of literary theory and criticism. In addition it also includes works written in English that were previously written in other languages, but which are significantly related with English and American traditions, or which have influenced the theoretical contemporary debate in the English Speaking world.
  • Patrología latina:electronic version of the first publication of the Patrologia Latina by Jacques-Paul Migney, published between 1844 and 1855, and the four volumes of indexes published between 1862 and 1865. It includes the works of the Church Fathers from Tertulliano in the 200AD to the death of the Pope Innocent III in 1216.
  • Bibliotheca Teubneriana Latina (BTL4): more than 900 works of Latin Literature from the editions of the Bibliotheca Teubneriana.
  • Thesaurus Linguae Latinae: dictionary of Latin language, which covers since the origins from the same to Isidore of Seville († 636). You should install the programme ICA Citrix Client for viewing this dictionary.
  • ADMYTE: Digital archive of manuscripts and Spanish texts: it contains full semi-paleographic transcripts containing 290 articles of the Medieval Spain, preserved in manuscripts and leaflets, incunabulum and post-incunabulum. You should borrow the CDs and install it at your own computer.
  • Thesaurus Linguae Graecae: ancient Greek texts between VIII century b. C. to 1453 that have survived until today.
  • MLA International Bibliography: it includes bibliographical records of books and articles on modern languages, literature and linguistics published in more of 4,400 specialised periodicals. Also, it includes a selection of monographs, work documents, conference proceedings, bibliographies, etc.
  • Bibliografía de la Literatura Española. It is a comprehensive bibliography of all documentation related to Literature in Spanish published in any language. It covers monographs, periodical articles, critical editions of literary works, book reviews, bibliographies, congress proceedings and other miscellaneous material.
  • Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts: references and summaries of international literature about linguistics and related sciences. It covers all aspects of language studies including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. It provides abstracts of articles and book reviews of over 1,500 journals, summaries of books, book chapters and theses.
  • Textes de la Renaissance: Collections Honoré Champion: full-text collection of great texts of European Renaissance of literature, philosophy, arts and sciences. It contains the collection Textes de la Renaissance, Etudes et essais sud la Renaissance, and the Dictionnarie of the Langue Francaise du 16 siécle d’Edmond Huguet.
  • Bibliographie der deutschen Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaft (BDSL): bibliographical references of books, journal articles, theses, etc. specialised in German language and literature. 
  • Kritisches Lexikon zur deutschsprachigen Gegenwartsliteratur (KLG)Critical dictionary of contemporary German literature.

  • WALS: The World Atlas of Language Structures (WALS) is a database with the structural properties (phonological, grammatical, lexical) of language, compiled from description materials (such as the references sources of grammar) by a team of 55 authors (most of them authorities on the subject). WALS online is a joint effort of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology and the Max Planck Digital Library.
  • ILoveLanguages: collection of website resources related to language and literature, addressed to linguists and lexicographers.
  • Lingu@net europa: resource for language learning developed by 24 European organisations. Selection of over 3,700 links of idiomatic resources, which respond to quality criteria that guarantee their linguistic correctness.
  • Internet Public Library-Language and lingüistics: classified links of Internet Public Library directory. 
  • Omniglot: the online encyclopedia of writing systems & languages

  • Your Dictionary.com:  website dedicated exclusively to all type of dictionaries: specialised, languages, thematical, etc.
  • LOGOS: multilingual translation website, it includes a multilingual dictionary with over 7 million terms.
  • Foreignword:  dictionaries and translation tools of 73 languages.
  • AULEX: online collection of brief vocabularies, for Spanish-speaking people, of 23 unpopular languages (Esperanto, Zapotec, Quechua, Totonac, etc.)
  • Tradukka: multilingual translator that supports 52 languages. The list is constantly growing.
  • Text to speech: pronunciation of 25 languages.

  • Proyecto Gutenberg: the first and largest library of electronic texts in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Finnish, Chinese and many other languages.
  • Online Text Collections in Western European Literature: resources and websites of literary texts classified by languages.
  • Somni: digital historical collection of the University of Valencia: you can consult all the incunabula, a selection of printings published between the 16th and 19th centuries, the collection of posters of the Spanish Civil War, etc.

  • Portal del Hispanismo: joint initiative of the Cervantes Institute and the Ministry of Culture. It provides current information on Hispanic studies in the world. It contains three large Hispanic databases: Hispanics, Spanish departments and associations.
  • Elcastellano.org: the website of Spanish language: website supported by the Antonio Nebrija Cultural Association. It offers digital dictionaries and language rules, translation space, Spanish digital courses for foreigners and Spanish people, discussion lists, forums and debates, literary websites, debates about language, etc.
  • Wikilengua del español: open and collaborative space for sharing information on standards, use and style of Spanish.
  • Corpus of Historical Spanish Texts: database of Old and Present Spanish reflected in texts since 1200. You can search by word, text and dates. It contains for example, from the Fueros of Castile until the Antología de cuentistas argentinos (Anthology of Argentine storytellers).
  • Hispanomedievalismo: online resources for academic research of Spanish Middle Ages literature and language.
  • Parnaseo: literature website of the University of Valencia, which contains numerous resources, such as the specialised journal Lemir, critical editions of Medieval and Renaissance texts, the journal Tirant, and the journal of Medieval wisdom literature Memorabilia.
  • Proyecto Ensayo Hispánico: directed by José Luis Gómez-Martínez, professor emeritus of Hispanic Essay in the Department of Romance Languages in the University of Georgia, with the objective of disseminating the Hispanic culture. It has two databases: essay-writers and philosophers works, and Anthology of Hispanic essays.
  • Eldígoras: hojas de lengua, literatura y artes gráficas: website about language, literature and creation in general, with texts, news, images and links selection.
  • Hispanic Literature: this website revises Hispanic literature from its beginnings. It analyses poetry, prose and drama periods. It is in English.
  • PhiloBiblon: is a bio-bibliographical database of texts written in the various Romance vernaculars of the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages and the early Renaissance. It consists of four separate bibliographies, each of which has its own home page:
    • BETA-Bibliografía Española de Textos Antiguos: medieval texts in Spanish.
    • BIPA-Bibliografía de la Poesía Áurea: Golden Age Poetry in Spanish (XVI-XVII).
    • BITAGAP-Bibliografia de Textos Antigos Galegos e Portugueses: medieval texts in Galician, Galician-Portuguese, and Portuguese.
    • BITECA-Bibliografia de Textos Catalans Antics: medieval texts in Catalan.
  • Corpus Val.Es.Co: specialized and analyzed samples of conversational Spanish portal.

  • Diccionarios de la Real Academia Española de la Lengua: you can consult online the Diccionario de la lengua española (Spanish language dictionary) and the Diccionario panhispánico de dudas ( Pan-Hispanic Dictionary of Doubts). 
  • Elcastellano.org- diccionarios: collection and classification of online dictionaries developed by the Antonio Nebrija Cultural Association. Spanish, bilingual, technical and regional dictionaries.
  • Jergas de habla hispana: jargons of different Spanish-speaking countries. The search can be made by terms or countries.
  • Dudas Fundéu: collection of linguistic comments and doubts clarifications on the use of Spanish language, developed by Fundéu: neologisms, anthroponyms, place names, gentilicios, transcriptions, translations, barbarisms, abbreviations and misuse.
  • DPDE: dictionary of Spanish discourse particles.

 

Virtual and digital libraries

  • Biblioteca Virtual Miguel de Cervantes: extensive project of digital edition of bibliographic, documentary and Spanish and Latin American criticism heritage. You can search by authors, institutions, genres, centuries, etc.
  • Hispanic Digital Library: project of the Spanish National Library, which provides free and open access to thousands of digitized documents, among them the printed books of the 15th and 19th centuries and manuscripts. It has a collection of linguistics and literature and a selection of links of other three Spanish digital collections.
  • Proyecto Cervantes: based in the Department of Classical and Modern languages of the Texas A&M University. It publishes different electronic editions of the complete works of Cervantes, studies and translations about his work and photo archive of the author and his work.
  • El Aleph: digital library of Spanish texts. You can search by title, author or subject.
  • Teatro del siglo de oro: web portal of printed texts and manuscripts of the Spanish Golden Age, created in collaboration with the Spanish National Library and the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library.
  • Palabra virtual: web portal of printed texts and manuscripts of the Spanish Golden Age, created in collaboration with the Spanish National Library and the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library.
  • Comedias, entremeses, textos y más: website of the Association for Hispanic Classical Teathre of Arizona, which contains a series of comedies of the Spanish Golden Age.

  • Traces: a Catalan website: the web portal TRACES is an access point to the different initiatives of GELCC (Study group on Contemporary Catalan Literature). TRACES contains bibliographic databases on Catalan language and literatures, and other databases.
  • Llengua.info: web portal of linguistic resources of the universities of the Joan Vives Institute, with information about training, linguist and terminological support, specialised mailing lists, legislation, grants and scholarships an linguistic policy.

  • Softcatala: translator, correcting, dictionaries, etc.
  • Optimot: linguistic information search-engine developed by the Catalan government that helps to solve problems about Catalan language.
  • Apertium: system of Spanish-Catalan translation, which allows translating files, internet websites, email and texts.

 

Virtual and Digital libraries

  • Biblioteca virtual Joan Lluis Vives: project of the Joan Lluís Vives Network that is part of the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library. It offers digital publications of the most representative works of Catalan, Valencian and Balearic works. It has institutional, thematic and authors web portals.
  • Biblioteca virtual Miguel de Cervantes- Lengua catalana: sub-catalogue of the Miguel de Cervantes that searches Catalan electronic texts at different virtual libraries simultaneously.
  • LletrA: virtual space of Catalan literature. Access to different resources about Catalan literature, created by the UOC.
  • Rialc: Catalan poetry collection of the 14th and 15th centuries, developed by the Universitá di Napoli with the collaboration of the UAB and the University of Girona. In Italian language.

Organisations and Institutions

  • Institut d'Estudis Catalans: It has a philological section that plays the role of the Catalan Language Academy.
  • Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua: institution created by the Valencian Government, which aims to identify, to determine and to develop the linguistic regulations of the Valencian language.
  • Institut Interuniversitari de Filologia Valenciana: the objective of the IIFV is the linguistic and literary study of the Valencian, within the general context of Catalan language and literature. The members are the University of Valencia, the University of Alacant and the Universitat Jaume I.
  • Institut Ramon Llull: the Ramon Llull Institute aims the external dissemination of Catalan language and culture which is expressed in all its modalities, materials and forms of expression, as well as its dissemination and teaching outside the linguistic domain.
  • Consorci per a la Normalització Lingüística: is an entity created from the common will of the Valencian Government and numerous City Councils, County councils and Provincial Councils with the objective of facilitating the knowledge, use and dissemination of Catalan language in al spheres.
