We address the problem of the (dis)synchronisation of time in childhood and youth. We aim to investigate the effects of students chronotype versus matching/mismatching with school schedules on health (how much and when they sleep, eat, exercise and spend time outdoors), on learning (verbal expression, spatial structuring and operations) mediated by cycles of alertness/activation and fatigue, time use (study, socialisation, family time, screen time, etc.) and on self-reported well-being (life satisfaction). Among the European educational systems, Spain has different school schedules for the same age groups, which allows us to distinguish between the split [S] and the compact [C] school day and examine the consequences for the lives of children and young people (health, learning, time use and life satisfaction) regarding whether student chronotype matches the school schedule or not. Recent evidence from chronobiology, chronomedicine and chronopsychology questions the organisation of social time (school, extracurricular activities) that does not respect biological time (circadian and ultracircadian cycles, chronotypes), partiicularly in relation to rest, food, physical activity and...We address the problem of the (dis)synchronisation of time in childhood and youth. Recent evidence from chronobiology, chronomedicine and chronopsychology questions the organisation of social time (school, extracurricular activities) that does not respect biological time (circadian and ultracircadian cycles, chronotypes), partiicularly in relation to rest, food, physical activity and time outdoors, time spent on academic activities and life satisfaction. In both the areas of health and education there is concern about the consequences for health and academic performance of a permanent mismatch between students' social and internal clocks. The novelty of our group is that it addresses this relevant and complex issue in a multidisciplinary way using mixed methodologies. It is multidisciplinary because it includes professionals and academics from areas such as biology, medicine, psychology, pedagogy and sociology. Our methods include a varied repertoire of techniques from the hormonal analysis of cortisol and melatonin, self-registration of dietary intake, systematic application of attention and cognitive activity tests (memory, reasoning, calculation) throughout the school day, combined with time management in the family environment and self-reported life satisfaction. The group aims to develop and interrelate these different lines of inquiry to provide more evidence and a better understanding of the relationship between school schedule organisation and learning. It is an interdisciplinary group whose findings will provide support for evidence-based educational policy related to the organisation of school time and contribute to a healthier, more efficient and more satisfying organisation of school time.
