Physician and naturalist, he was one of the leading experts in Valencian wildlife, being practically the originator of herpetological studies in Spain. He wrote the Catalogue des reptiles et des amphibiens de la Péninsule Ibérique et des îles Baléares (1878), published in Spanish in 1879, and corrected and expanded in 1881. He was also interested in botany, field in which he published Memoria sobre los hongos comestibles y venenosos de la provincia de Valencia (1873). In 1883 he was appointed chief gardener at the Botanical Garden in Valencia and, in 1892, full professor of Natural History at the University of Valencia, where he created a museum containing more than 43,000 pieces.
