International Women's Day: exhibitions and special events

  • March 7th, 2025

Despite the emergency situation due to the adverse weather, the libraries of the Universitat de València have prepared various initiatives to highlight the role of women in different disciplines. In addition, the SDG group has updated the thematic guide on gender equality, available for consultation at the following link: Guide SDG 8M, and the collection of the month in our Trobes catalogue is dedicated to Gloria Fuertes, Spanish poet and writer, known mainly for her poetry for children, but also for her work for adults, which addressed themes such as love, social injustice and gender equality.

Highlights of activities in the libraries:

  • Biblioteca d'Humanitats: You can now visit the virtual exhibition on maternity ‘Mothers, the portent breaking the shadows’, with the collaboration of the lecturer of the Department of Spanish Philology Luz C. Souto. It is part of the Educational Innovation project: ‘DTD_*iLAB: Collaborative learning through interdisciplinary projects (third phase)’, coordinated by Jesús Peris Llorca. In this project, students have analysed several works from different perspectives, including a novel by a Spanish author, a novel by a Spanish-American author, a film or play and a comic or graphic work.
  • Biblioteca del Jardí Botànic: At the library you can visit the exhibition of the facsimile of Anna Atkins, a pioneer in botanical photography and scientific illustration, and they devoted their social media publication to botanical women.
  • Biblioteca de Ciències de la Salut: The library published in our social media about two Valencian medical women pioneers in gynaecology: Dr. Manuela Solís Clarás (1862-1910), and Dr. Mª Concepció Aleixandre Ballester (1862-1952), both key figures in the advancement of medicine and women's health.
  • Biblioteca de Psicologia i Esport: They will dedicate a special bibliographic exhibition to women athletes, with special attention to the figure of Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to officially run the Boston Marathon.
  • Biblioteca de Cienciès Socials: They have recorded a video inspired by Rosie the Riveter, icon of women's work during the Second World War, which was launched on our YouTube channel. In addition, all social media posts in March will be dedicated to women.
  • Biblioteca Històrica: Our social media will publish a tribute to the historical librarians of the Universitat de València: Maria Moliner, Pilar Faus, Pilar Gómez Gómez and Mª Cruz Cabeza.
  • Biblioteca d'Educació: In the library you can consult the Point of Interest with bibliography related to the International Women's Day.
  • Biblioteca de Ciències: The library has prepared a bibliographic display with the title ‘8 científicas para el 8M’ (8 scientists for 8M).

With these initiatives, the libraries of the University of Valencia reaffirm their commitment to gender equality and the visibility of the role of women in culture, science and sport. We invite the entire university community to participate and discover these proposals.
