The exhibition "Images of violence, gazes of resistance: sexist violence in the Bible and its visual reception" can be visited at the Biblioteca d'Humanitats "Joan Reglà", ground floor, from March 3 to 31, 2026
This exhibition, curated by Cristina Expósito de Vicente and Elena Monzón Pertejo, explores the violence perpetrated against women in biblical narratives and their artistic representations. Through an analysis of how male chauvinist violence has been transferred from texts to Western artistic expression, it reveals the persistence of prejudices, myths, and stereotypes with Judeo-Christian roots that still exist in contemporary culture.
Although the 19th century saw the secularization of Western European societies, the influence of Judeo-Christian culture remains—sometimes hidden—in many acts of violence against women. Therefore, it is crucial to address this issue from its roots, with the aim of demystifying many of these forms of violence and providing them with their historical and artistic foundations so that they can be dismantled at their core
From diverse perspectives and disciplines—such as painting, sculpture, photography, film, and performance—the exhibition revisits women from the Old and New Testaments to reflect on the violence they suffered and its echoes in the present. In doing so, it proposes an exercise in demystification and critical review that invites us to rethink our own perspectives and the symbolic structures that underpin them.
Each panel has been developed by a researcher, who proposes a reflection on a biblical female figure and her visual representation. Through their analyses, the exhibition becomes a space for critical thinking and a re-examination of the imaginaries that have shaped the history of Western art.
