An academic and professional day to reflect on the existence or not of Valencian cinema and whether we can talk about a "new Valencian cinema" today.
An academic conference will discuss Valencian cinema at the UV
• The day, composed of three round tables, will take place on the morning of Wednesday, April 24, in the Hall of Degrees of the Faculty of Philology, Translation and Communication
• The day will deepen and debate what is considered Valencian cinema, the cinema made from the periphery and the upcoming Valencian cinema
The Audiovisual Council of the Valencian Community and the Chair of Prospective and Audiovisual Analysis of the University of Valencia are organizing an academic conference next Wednesday, April 24 under the title 'The new Valencian cinema under debate', which will discuss in three round tables different aspects of current Valencian cinematographic creation and production.
The day was an initiative of Àlvar Peris-Blanes, professor of audiovisual communication at the University of Valencia and member of the Audiovisual Council of the Valencian Community, given the realization that there is no tradition of academic studies or lines open studies on Valencian cinema. "The aim with the organization of this day is to resume from the university a set of reflections and analyzes that have already been proposed on previous occasions by institutions and professionals. Basically, we want to discuss whether Valencian cinema exists, in history and today, and if so, how we could define it. In recent times, there has been a revival of Valencian and Valencian-language cinema, in terms of the quantity and quality of the films, which forces us to reflect on whether it is true that we are facing a "new Valencian cinema" , as certain voices assure", explains Peris-Blanes.
The day is aimed at students and the audiovisual sector and can be accessed for free by registering at https://events.fundacio.es/e/2037/el-nou-cinema-valencia-a-debat . The day has the collaboration of the Cultural Observatory of the UV, the Department of Theory of Languages and Communication Sciences of the UV, the Cinema Room of the UV and the City Council of Valencia.
Activities of the day
The day will begin at 9.30 am with the inauguration by José María Vidal, president of the Audiovisual Council of the Valencian Community; Guillermo López Garcia, professor of Journalism at the UV and coordinator of the Audiovisual Analysis and Prospective Chair; and Raúl Albeledo, from the Cultural Observatory of the University of Valencia.
The first of the morning's round tables, moderated by Peris-Blanes himself, will answer the question 'What is Valencian cinema?' with the professor of Contemporary History at the University of Valencia, Marta García Carrión, who has reflected on Valencian cinema from the beginnings and during the Franco regime; the journalist and writer Xavier Aliaga, member of the Valencian Council of Culture (CAC); and the actress Rosana Pastor, also a member of the Valencian Council of Culture (CAC). The two have been the promoters from the CAC of a recent report on the production of Valencian fiction. Next, the panel 'Making cinema from the periphery' will take place, moderated by Francesc Felipe, with the participation of film producers Felipe Lage (Zeitun Films, Galicia) and Ariadna Dot (Lastor Mèdia, Catalonia), who will transfer how cinema has evolved in the territories of the Spanish State with their own language where they come from and where they work, and what would be its main characteristics.
