The Equality Unit of the University of Valencia was created by agreement of the Governing Council in October 2007. The need for its creation is determined by Organic Law 4/2007, of April 12, which modifies the Organic Law 6/2001, of December 21, from universities (LOMLOU), and its main objective is to make effective the right to equal treatment and opportunities between women and men

The Equality Unit is regulated as the General Service of the University of Valencia, aimed at developing the equality policies agreed by the institution within its multi-year planning. Its main functions:

• To elaborate and develop the required programmes in order to promote the equality policies in the University of Valencia.
• To coordinate the specific actions that, in this sense, may start the different bodies, centres and services.
• All the competences reserved by the Statutes and the rest of existing rules, like the foreseen in the articles 138 and 139 that refer to the production and approval of postgraduate studies and the university extension studies.
