The “Eduard Boscà” Science Library, in collaboration with UV Cooperation, has donated and sent 17 tables to equip the public libraries of Algemesí and Albal, which were severely affected by the DANA. This donation was coordinated through the Official College of Librarians and Documentalists of the Valencian Community (COBDCV), which facilitated contact with the libraries to address their specific needs.
The torrential rains and flooding severely impacted libraries and archives in the l’Horta Sud region, destroying a significant portion of their collections, furniture, and computer equipment.
In Algemesí, the water and mud reached a height of 1.20 meters, causing severe damage to books, furniture, and the library’s infrastructure. Out of nearly 70,000 volumes, only 29,000 are currently in circulation. With the library still closed, the donated tables will be used in a temporary reading room that will be set up during the reconstruction process. The library is expected to reopen with minimal services on April 2, coinciding with the International Children’s and Youth Book Day.
Meanwhile, in Albal, the library lost 95% of its collection. Currently, no reading rooms have been able to open, and the books remain stored in boxes, making the lending service extremely difficult. The donated tables will be used in the library once the renovation work is completed.
This solidarity initiative by the “Eduard Boscà” Science Library and UV Cooperation contributes to the recovery of the libraries affected by the DANA and demonstrates the commitment of the University of Valencia to supporting culture and access to information in emergency situations.
