Fire in the Library

The Biblioteca Histórica is preparing the exhibition "Fire in the Library. Books that set fire to the Europe of the Enlightenment", curated by Nicolás Bas Martín, from the Department of History of Science and Documentation at the University of Valencia. The project will be articulated around a selection of books considered the bestsellers of the forbidden literature of the eighteenth century. Authors and works that from different fronts -philosophical, political, cultural, social and religious- advocated for a more democratic Europe against the absolutism of the Old Regime.

The exhibition is completed by a series of contemporary artistic photographs of the twentieth century, in black and white, by the Valencian photographer Pedro Hernández, which seek to question the texts of the Age of Enlightenment.

The exhibition opens next Thursday, September 14 at 7 p.m. and can be visited until November 26, 2023.
