ANTIGONE

After the fratricidal struggle in which Eteocles and Polynices, the sons of Oedipus, die, Creon, the new ruler of the city, forbids under penalty of death the burial of Polynices’ body, leaving it as food for dogs and birds of prey. Antigone, despite her uncle’s prohibition, decides to bury her brother, even though it may cost her life...

With Antigone, a masterful and complex work, Sophocles invites us to reflection, moderation, and intelligence—virtues against which both Creon and Antigone herself ultimately transgress.

LYSISTRATA

Tired of enduring the prolonged absences from home that war imposes on men, and the resulting lack of sexual relations, the women of all Hellas, summoned to Athens by Lysistrata, decide to turn such an uncomfortable situation to their advantage by taking it to its extreme consequences.

To achieve peace outside their homes, they will declare war within them: they will force the men to make peace by completely refusing to have sexual relations with them for as long as the war lasts.
