"How to study comics: a graphic introduction to the academic study of comics"

  • May 25th, 2023

New exhibition in the Humanities Library. You can now read on our walls the comic guide "Com estudiar el còmic: una introducció gràfica a l'estudi acadèmic de la historieta" by Enrique del Rey Cabero, Michael Goodrum and Josean Morlesín Mellado, about the approaches to the study of comics'. Produced by Cultura als Campus and la Cátedra de Estudios del cómic.

Josean has been in charge of drawing himself and his companions, who explain introductory aspects of the study of comics, the differences with graphic novels, onomatopoeias, the different types of comic strips, where comics are sold, how they are distributed... In the author's words: 'The idea of doing it in comic form is much more difficult, because you have to give a rhythm and make sure that there is not too much text and that it is not too heavy. Also, it has to be attractive to the eye. I think Josean's drawing is very friendly and easy to read' says Enrique, who points out that 'I would like to publish a whole book on how to study comics at university because, from an academic point of view, you can study comics from many perspectives: the form, the colours, the drawing, the composition, Cultural Studies, narratology, etc. Now, for example, graphic medicine is booming. Another path is the so-called 'graphic justice' or the connections between justice and comics. This does not yet exist in Spain, but there are people who even talk about making contracts in comic form so that they are better understood'.
