"Philosophy of incommunicado detention. The clandestine letters of Penitentiary Unit 1 during the dictatorship"

  • October 7th, 2024

Inauguration of the exhibition on the ground floor of the Biblioteca d'Humanitats on October 30 at 11:30 a.m. The author will comment on his experiences.

The book by Fernando Reati and Paula Simón, on which this exhibition is based, shows how between 1976 and 1979, hundreds of political prisoners in Cordoba prison were subjected to a regime of complete isolation and inactivity, but managed with ingenuity to keep communication alive beyond the walls. This is history.

Letters, family visits, newspapers, magazines, manual activities, gymnastics and sports were strictly forbidden in order to destroy them physically and psychologically. To alleviate the tedium, the prisoners clandestinely made handicrafts, drawings and embroideries with forbidden tools such as bones, nails, towel threads and denim. Some of these objects were preserved at great risk and taken out of the prison almost always in a clandestine manner. They keep the memory of a collective experience of resistance inside a legal prison where the prisoners remained in total isolation for three years, a unique case within the Argentine dictatorship.
